Dylan Maher learned what it takes to become a college-bound athlete before he verbally committed to Division III power Dickinson College last week.
That’s because Maher’s older brother, recent Ridgefield (Conn.) High School graduate Bryce Maher, will be playing baseball at the University of Massachusetts.
“He has pushed me and helped me become the person and athlete I am today,” Dylan said of his brother’s influence.
Having one brother play baseball and another lacrosse in college is indeed, rare, though certainly not unheard of by any stretch. University of North Carolina-bound lacrosse star Jack Lambert, a two-time All-American for John Jay (N.Y.), is the younger brother of Tufts University senior pitcher Dean Lambert.
Dylan Maher switched from baseball to lacrosse in the sixth grade.
The attackman/midfielder, who was recruited by both Division I and Division III programs, possesses strong stick skills and shooting ability.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Dylan on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I was looking for a school that combined great academics with great lacrosse and Dickinson was a perfect fit. As well as loving the school itself, I really felt a great connection with (Dickinson Head) Coach (Dave) Webster and I knew that I would be in good hands with him.
When I visited, I loved the campus atmosphere and could really see myself playing lacrosse and attending school at Dickinson.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited St. John’s, Salisbury, Hartford and Tufts and narrowed my choice down to Dickinson and Salisbury.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I pride myself in my stick skills and consider my self a strong shooter. I enjoy finishing inside and also creating from the lefty wing and taking it to the net. I love to take the open shot but I am always looking for the easy pass to one of my teammates.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
There is always room for improvement and I am constantly trying to work on my stick skills as well as my shot. I try and play with the attitude of never being satisfied and that has helped me continue to work hard on the field and in the weight room.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was first introduced to lacrosse in sixth grade when my interest for baseball was declining. I played baseball since I was a little kid and felt that I had enough of it and became instantly interested in lacrosse when I first saw it being played by my cousin Rob. I am extremely happy that I had made the decision to switch from baseball to lacrosse.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Team Superstar 2014 and we attended the Lehigh Laxfest, LI Shootout, Evo Lax games and UMass Mid-Summer Classic. We also just finished this summer up with a championship win at Hotbeds in Delaware with a solid 10-0 record.
Any final thoughts?
I want to thank my family, friends and teammates for helping me and supporting me through this process. Also, my older brother Bryce. He has pushed me and helped me become the person and athlete I am today.
