Brendan Kavanagh’s style of play is similar to that of his brother, Notre Dame standout and former Chaminade star Matt Kavanagh.

“I have a Canadian, hockey-type style of play like my brother,” Brendan, a rising senior attackman at Kellenberg Memorial (N.Y.) said.

Both are also lefties.

But when it came time to make his college choice, Brendan Kavanagh decided to take the road less traveled in his family. Literally.

Kavanagh has verbally committed to Hofstra University, whose campus is located less than 3 miles from Kellenberg and 5 miles from his hometown of Rockville Centre, as reported at Twitter.com/Joe_Lombardi.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Brendan on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
(Hofstra Head) Coach (Seth) Tierney was a big reason I chose Hofstra. He preaches hard work and playing tough and that’s how I love to play. It is also very close to home and having my brother away at school, it was hard for him to come home during the year, so I wanted to make it easier on my parents with the travel.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was talking to Boston U, Villanova and Richmond, but only visited Hofstra.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I’m a good dodger to my left and see the field well. I have a Canadian, hockey-type style of play like my brother.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
The biggest thing I think I need to work on is finishing right handed. I can create space moving righty, but always feel more comfortable going back to my left.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I grew up playing lacrosse. I have two older brothers that played and I live in a pretty big lacrosse town in Rockville Centre. I also played baseball and hockey. I have a big hockey family.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play on the Long Island Express and we went to the NCSLA, Tri-State and Brine Shootout.

Any final thoughts?
I’d like it thank my parents for everything they do for me and driving me to all the tournaments. Id also like to thank my high school coach Mike Schwalje, who helped better my game everyday at practice and helped me throughout the entire recruiting process.
