Postseason action will be front and center today — in the NCAA at least. (Check the links below for today’s first-round men’s and women’s collegiate games.)
For most of the region, it’s the final weekend of the regular season.
Except in Nassau County.
The Section 8 playoffs started yesterday with four Class B games.
Unbeaten and top-seeded Garden City downed Division 11-3; Manhasset beat Calhoun 15-3; Wantagh downed Floral Park 16-3; Carey downed Hewlett 9-7; South Side beat Jericho 14-7; and Bethpage beat Bellmore JFK 7-2.
The quarterfinals are set for Friday, May 18. Among the matchups: Garden City will play South Side, Manhasset will take on Bethpage and Wantagh will face Carey at Hofstra University.
Today in Suffolk County’s Huntington Station, national power St. Anthony’s will try to avoid losing three straight games for the first time since 2006 when the Friars host red-hot Yorktown at 1 p.m.
The Huskers have won eight straight.
St. A’s is coming off back-to-back losses (vs. Darien and Chaminade) for the first time since 2009, when it lost consecutive games to Chaminade and Yorktown.
Also at 1 p.m., another streak is on the line as Clarkstown South hosts rival Clarkstown North. Clarkstown North last beat South in 1997. You can watch the game live on msgvarsity.com.
In another rivalry game, Pleasantville visits Byram Hills at noon.
There are also some interesting evening games in Section 1.
Arlington visits Suffern at 7 p.m. in a battle of two Class A contenders. Suffern, which fell to Lakeland/Panas by one goal twice last season, beat the Rebels 6-5 in its last outing. You can watch the game at 7:30 p.m. on Monday on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premier broadcast, you can catch the game on msgvarsity.com and On-Demand Channel 614.
At 7:30 p.m., Somers hosts a Lakeland/Panas squad looking to bounce back from the Suffern setback. It will be the third annual “Communities Collide to Benefit the Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley. The varsity game will be preceded by a 5:30 p.m. game between the JV teams.
In a Section 1 vs. Section 11 crossover affair, Mahopac visits Northport at noon. Both teams could use a win to get some momentum heading into the postseason. Northport, which fell to Smithtown West 18-5 in its last outing, has dropped four of its last seven. Mahopac had lost five in a row before beating Suffern 10-8.
Turning to Connecticut, Brien McMahon visits Westhill at 10 a.m., Greenwich hosts Danbury at 11 a.m., Ridgefield plays at St. Joseph’s-Trumbull at 1 p.m.
In a Connecticut vs. Massachusetts crossover, Weston (Conn.) plays at Longmeadow (Mass.).
The New Jersey slate is highlighted by a 3 p.m. MSG Varsity game between Ridgewood and Don Bosco Prep at Mahwah High School.
Also of note, unbeatens Bridgewater-Raritan and Somerville collide at Bridgewater-Raritan, Summit (14-0) hosts Westfield (9-5), and Delbarton plays at Mountain Lakes.
Of course, there are many other big games in the tristate region today. Scroll down to check the links to access the complete schedules. But if there’s a game you think we should have noted, by all means, be sure to post the info ASAP on the “Comments” portion of this thread.

In the span of a few days, several games showed the Section 1 Class A race is wide open as defending champ Mahopac ended a five-game losing streak by beating Suffern, which then turned around and beat two-time finalist Lakeland/Panas, which earlier this season beat Mahopac.
Who do you think is the favorite to win the Section 1 Class A crown?

I’m not sure but I think Pleasantville (3-12) needs a win today to get into the playoffs. It would be a shame if they didn’t get in because they are better than 3/4 of the teams in Class C.
wow.I don’t think they can beat a BH team that just beat RYe.
Byram Hills 7, Pleasantville 6 (3-2 Pville at half)
Will msg varsity be at town-st a’s??
any thoughts on croton v put valley?
PV 11 Croton 5 Final
Possibly, but if they lose today they will be 3-5 against section 1 Class C teams?
i hope that is the case for Pville because they played very well today and as I said earlier today they are a good team who deserves to be in the playoffs.
Good teams don’t finish 3-13! That’s a joke!

Goalies:
Northport — Tom Troiano, 12 saves.
Mahopac — Crecco, 10 saves.
Too bad town lost. I’m sure the coaches will use it to get the kids ready for wilton & more importantly the playoffs. All it really effects is regiional & national rankings which are subjective & meaningless. Town needs to get back to the downstste finals. Beat GC & this loss means NOTHING
Speaking of Wilton, they barely got by Norwalk today 7-6. Was at the game and they looked awful. Letdown after Prep, junior prom/relay for life, was somewhat expected but it was a tough game to watch.
I imagine there’s a bit of running in their near future.
Norwalk’s #s 11 and 33 (think Keel and Edwards?) were filthy, believe they are going to Bryant and Penn respectively.
Yeah a win best of course but when you lose by only 1 goal to a top team nothing to hang heads about and further gets Town tougher for upcoming play.
You really think they have a chance against GC?
As good as anyone in Class B for sure. Their o can stay with anyone.
Town played GC Real Tough in last yrs downstate finals at White Plains. They jumped all over the Trojans & the Maroon faithful were STUNNED! It was an awesome 1st Half. GC righted the ship & moved on to the State Finals, but not without Town scaring the Heck out of Em. These two teams have a long storied history. If you’re a Sect.1 fan town is the Class of the CROP. I’ll never forget watching them win a State Championship vs W. Genny at Hofstra. It was right after town’s Prom & the kids looked a Lil lethargic walking onto the field as W. Genny came out in a militaristic march. I Never Count Out Town! Just ask Darien. So YES I think they stand a chance.
Right now Yorktown’s entire season can be defined by beating Darien. I’m sure many Husker fans can remember back in the day when it was a win over Yorktown that was the highlight of some other team’s season. Sad to see a really good team have their fans celebrate over playing a bunch of close losses to Long Island teams. “We Stand A Chance” shouldn’t be their motto in 2012. They are better than that. Good luck in the NYS playoffs.
Welcome back Lax Novice Took u a while to see the YTOWN DARIEN game on the replay,??? is it still your contention that refs had it in for Darien, or the long bus ride and all the lucky goals on the EMOs for town, the game wasn’t as close as the final score, with just over 10 min. left it was 11-5 town, Darien scored 4 goals in the last 4 min.of the game, the last with 23 sec left Both teams are good and should have success in their states playoffs. You however are an obnoxious FOOL!!! An embarrassment To Darien fax fans with your comments about YTOEN and other programs!!
May be time for all of us to do an “intervention” for Novice Lax. He “took his ball and went home” after Town downed Darien – too ashamed to be seen or heard from after cluelessly saying the game would be no contest and his precious Darien team would roll to any easy win. Now he comes back bitter and more non-sensical than ever. Is there anything we can do to help him?
Final: Don Bosco 8, Ridgewood 4
Arlington jumps out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter at Suffern.
Albany-bound Dan Hanson gets the latest Arlington goal. Admirals are stunning Suffern 5-0 late in the first quarter.
Suffern, coming off a huge 6-5 win over Lakeland/Panas, trails Arlington 7-1 at the half.
Freshman Brendan Sunday with two goals for Arlington, which has received strong play from junior goalie JD Colarusso.
Senior attackman Brendan Caoili has four goals and Arlington has a surprisingly one-sided 8-1 lead at Suffern after three.
Final: Iona Prep 12, CBA-Albany 5
Somers leading LP 4-1 in the 2nd qtr
4-4 HT. Nice run by LP to end the half.
7-4 LP after 3. Rebel D getting it done.
7-5 LP wins.
Final: Arlington 9, Suffern 2. Huge win heading into Class A postseason.
So Suff beats LP and now Arlington trounces Suff. Class A is up for grabs!
for sure.
Hangover loss for Suffern. Sect.1A is wide open. Probably the most competitive class with no clear favorite. Suffern’s at a crossroad. They can use this loss to motivate them or like last year they can be 3rd fiddle. Maybe you boys need to step-up & be heard. TZ repped rockland well to the State Finals in hoops knocking off JD & Coleman in a huge upset in Glens Falls. Do you boys have what it takes?
Northport is a very solid team. Pac would have rather won but I think this close game vs a quality LI team bodes well for how Pac is playing.
Slacrosse: respect your knowledge of the game, but have to disagree here. The PAC has lost 6 of 7…it’s tough to say that a loss, no matter who against, is an indication of how well they are playing.
Just my gut that they had to at least play a good level of lax TODAY to stay close to a pretty strong team–IF they can keep it up, good for them. But to your point of course no guarantee on that in what has been a tough season for them.
yes-this loss was good for pac.I don’t know who you root for,but nport is a quality team. Many li teams don’t get any respect bc of the top teams in a this year(sw,wi). The reg season means nothing, its about time to strap it on for the playoffs.
Do not count out PAC in a Wide Open Class A. They’ve had a tough yr, not being able to play home games because their field’s unplayable. They have an excellent coach. I’m sure he’s chomping at the bit to get the playoffs started. Remember PAC’s defending champs with many pieces still in place from last yr. Again it’s time to Stand Up & be counted. Shovels of dirt are being thrown on PAC’s coffin. Are you boys gonna let all this smack be spoken about a Defending Sect.1A champ or are you gonna be HEARD!? Right Now LP’s thinking they have the inside track & Arlington proved that the loss to Suffern a few days ago was a fluke
John Jay beats Hen Hud 9-5 on Senior Night. JJ led 5-2 at half.
Final: Trinity-Pawling 18, Gunnery 4
Way to go T-P. Once again the Blue & Gold Represent. If you want to check out a T-P product tune into Espn at 1 & watch Princeton freshman attackman McDonald from my Alma mater. I hope he lights up UVA. There’s a pretty good player from St A’s on the tigers too. Schrieber. I lost to Princeton 13-10 my senior yr at F&M, back in the day. They were one of the D1 schools we never beat. In my 4 yrs at F&M we beat Lehigh, Delaware, Penn St. Drexel, & William & Mary, but never pulled the David vs Goliath win on Princeton or Bucknell another D1 school we put a scare in. D3 schools don’t get these chances anymore. Those were the days. Keep it up & beat Hotchkiss, Kent & Taft so you get a Founders League Title!!!
Rye 10. Fox Lane 4
Lakeland/Panas 7, Somers 5
Lakeland/Panas Scoring:
Tony Laguerre – 2 Goals 1 Assist
Chris Monteferrante – 2 Goals
Sean Murphy – 1 Goal
James Flagerty – 1 Goal

Somers Scoring:
Kevin Cousin – 1 Goal 1 Assist
Anthony Carpenter – 2 Goals
Mike Ashikari – 1 Goal 1 Assist
Tim Cousin – 1 Goal
Chris Cousin – 13 Saves
Freshman Jack Near of Notre Dame scored the most notable collegiate goal by a Bville alumni midway thru the 1st qtr to put ND up 4-0 it’s now 6-4 ND at half vs Yale in a 1st round NCAA tourney match up.
Talking about Bville, the Bville/Somers game tomorrow should be a very interesting one for sure–final chance for Bville to show how they measure up vs a traditionally tough northern Westchester team. At the very least, will provide a good warm-up for the play-offs.
slacrosse: you’re absolutely correct. Bville’s league is lite, but M-neck had more talent last yr, pelham sounded better than they are & I’d expect more Fr white plains but they graduated a player too. The ville runs thru their schedule with ease so getting LP, PAC & Somers was important. Win or lose today it’ll be good. Too bad there weren’t enough refs to go on 5/5 & they have to play this game now. I’m sure the ville will still show-up to play, but when you’re this close to playoffs resting a banged up player becomes a consideration. I hope all their pieces are in place. At least they’ll know what a decent upstate or LI team is like Fr playing somers because C is lite. Except BH might be able to hang with the ville a Lil, but they couldn’t last yr. Bville is good & finally we have an elite program south of 287
Good point about banged up players resting. Could go either way but my gut is that Bville wants to go all out in its last chance to beat a good name team. A win or even a close game should give them a shot of confidence looking past Class C vs facing a LI team. Maybe a lesser issue for Somers, although some “elite northern Westchester” status on the line for them.
As I’ve said earlier feel Byram Hills has a realistic but definitely “long shot” chance to upset Bville. But only a shot to do this IF BH’s D can step up and give Larrebee some GOOD close support as Larrebee can take care of even tough shots from further out. Obviously winning a share of FO’s and ground balls is key as well. Bville has a good FO kid-maybe BH should use a pole or have poles on the wings trying to to at least interrupt/slow down FO play.
I think BH should play a “deliberate” (didn’t say “slow down” offense)–they can’t run with Bville.
Good luck to all.
