It was quite a day.
Here are some highlights from Thursday:
* Resurgent Yorktown built a six-goal first quarter lead and coasted to a 16-9 win at Somers behind Conor Gately’s four goals and four assists and Frankie Fusco’s six goals.
* Sean Wilkinson, the hero of Ridgefield’s state title win over Fairfield Prep last year, scored the game-winner as the Tigers outlasted Wilton 15–14 in overtime. Ridgefield forced OT on a goal by Sean Riley with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
* Fairfield University-bound goaltender Tom Branca continued his stellar play this season, making 17 saves as John Jay edged Mahopac 6-5.
* Behind a strong defensive effort led by Michael Kaplan, Ben Hylka and goaltender Michael Zingaro, Lakeland/Panas pulled away for an 8-3 win over previously unbeaten Bronxville, the defending Section 1 Class C champions, in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Whew. It was like a week’s full of interesting outcomes crammed into one day.
Now, we’re just a day away from what should be a spectacular Saturday.
But first, let’s check out what’s on tap for today.
Darien hopes to bounce back from its 11-9 loss at Yorktown on Tuesday when it plays at Brien McMahon at 7 p.m. The Senators, like Darien, are 8-1 with their loss coming against Glastonbury.
Bayport-Blue Point, coming off an unlikely run to the Class C state title game last year, plays at Sayville at 4:30 p.m. Both teams are 8-2.
Also in Suffolk, Mount Sinai (7-4) hosts Shoreham-Wading River(8-1) at 5:30 p.m.
In Section 1, Rockland rivals Tappan Zee and Clarkstown South square off at 7 p.m. at TZ. Also, Nyack plays at O’Neill at 6:30 p.m., Clarkstown North hosts Pearl River at 3:45 p.m. and Hastings hosts its own Route 9 centric tournament that also includes Dobbs Ferry and Ardsley.
Among 11 games in Nassau County, Hewlett plays at Bethpage at 7 p.m.

Has anyone done any matchup analysis of
GC vs. Wogue
Town vs. GC
Town vs. Wogue
Is GC that good this year? Haven’t had a chance to see any games either live or TV.
LI13?
I was tweeting last night about the possible matchup between Yorktown and Garden City in the state semis. Yorktown seems to have taken off after the position change of moving Fusco to midfield. I have seen them only against SW and they were overmatched due to playing defense 75-80% of the time. Garden City does not have a dominant FOGO and if Manning continues the way he played against Darien and Somers, they should be able to let their offense get into a rhythm. GC’s defense is good, but it isn’t what it has been in the past. Stay away from E Berkery and attack the other guys, they are inexperienced. I’d be concerned about Town’s defense…shutting down GC will be harder than Darien because they just have so many weapons. GC’s attack plays extremely well together and will be tough to stop. Dwyer may be the best feeder on LI (either him or Moroney from Manhasset), Guterding has a great shot and Kennedy is a great inside finisher.
If they play, I would take GC by 3 or 4 goals, maybe like 12-8 or 13-9.
For those on Twitter, be sure to follow LI Lax @CKieser13.
The Darien game was won on the EMO; Yorktown’s was good, Darien’s was bad. Garden City has maybe the best EMO in the country, and if Yorktown tries to play the rough, physical game they played against Darien, I think they get smoked.
Sayville beat defending NY Class C state finalist Bayport-Blue Point 9-8 in OT. Sayville scored twice in the last minute of regulation to force overtime.
Final: Eastchester 14, New Rochelle 11
Tom Cirillo (7 g , 2 a); Rob Carinci (4 g, 2 a); Joe Arcidiacono (22 saves) and Pat Guido (10 gbs) led Eastchester.
Darien bounces back from Yorktown loss by beating Brien McMahon 19-3.
