The tristate lax world is still buzzing about last night.

For good reason.

After all, the specter of a possible unbeaten regular season became a trending topic in Darien after the Blue Wave beat Manhasset for the first time since 2008 last week.

Yorktown, meanwhile, was trying to regroup after back-to-back one-sided losses to Chaminade and Smithtown West.

So what happened when the nationally ranked Blue Wave visited Charlie Murphy Field?

Not what anyone expected.

Yorktown built a five-goal lead and held on for an 11-9 victory.

When we talk about the keys to winning in lacrosse, faceoffs and goaltending are always front and center. For Yorktown, St. Joseph’s-bound senior Danny Manning was dominant in the faceoff X. Sophomore goalie Austin Graham, pressed into a starting role after Zach Reilly suffered a season-ending broken collarbone injury, was spectacular in goal, making 16 saves.

Senior attackman Conor Gately triggered the offense with a stellar feeding effort while position switches involving Frankie Fusco and Connor Vercruysse paid immediate dividends. Fusco was moved from attack to midfield. Vercruysse was moved from midfield to attack. Both had three goals.

Yorktown junior Trevor Koelsch, who was the primary defender on Darien’s all-time leading scorer, Case Matheis, held the Duke-bound senior, considered the top offensive player in the nation, to one goal and three assists.

You can watch the premiere broadcast of the game on Friday at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premiere, you can catch it anytime on On-Demand Channel 614 or msgvarsity.com.

Meanwhile, over at Lakeland, the defending Section 1 champion Mahopac Indians suffered their first loss, falling to Lakeland/Panas 6-5 in overtime in a rematch of last year’s Class A sectional final. The Rebels won it on a goal by Brian Prunty.

Both Yorktown and LP will have big tests in their next games. On Thursday, Yorktown plays at Somers, which is unbeaten vs. Section 1 teams, and Lakeland/Panas hosts defending Section 1 Class C champion Bronxville.

Now, to today.

Bronxville will be getting a game in before taking on LP tomorrow with a game at Eastchester. Also at 4:30 p.m., White Plains visits Pelham. In a 5 p.m. game, New Rochelle plays at Scarsdale.

On Long Island, Syosset will look to bounce back from a 14-8 loss to Massapequa when it hosts Baldwin at 4:45 p.m. Also among the 12 games in Nassau County, Massapequa hosts Port Washington, also at 4:45 p.m.

In Suffolk, West Islip hosts East Islip at 4 p.m., Smithtown West plays at Walt Whitman at 4:45 p.m. and Northport hosts Sachem East at 4:15 p.m.

It’s a light day in Connecticut. Among the handful of matchups, Brien McMahon (7-1) plays at Simsbury (7-0) at 5:30 p.m.

In New Jersey, Bridgewater-Raritan (8-0) plays at Hunterdon Central (7-1).

Ytown goalie is Austin Graham, not Austin Fusco. And congrats, great job!

  2. Da Crop! says:

Austin A-Wall Graham was awesome between the pipes.
This will not be a turnaround game or a “Showdown” as someone referred to earlier. Get the bulbs changed on the Somers scoreboard. The GREEN machine is in full affect and now cannot be stopped. The Crop will also be there to see the Red crying Rage , Tuskers and coach Lew and his theatrics get Pummelled. Somers D and goalie are in for a LONG night.

    Yorktown- 16
    Somers-5

PUT A A FACE ON THAT!!

  3. Injun Joe says:

Thursday is a double-header at Somers

John Jay vs Mahopac at 4:00pm
    Yorktown vs Somers at 7:00pm

  4. laxing89 says:

    Yorktown 18
    Somer 7

Don’t really see this being a “showdown”.

Huskers look focused again – Offense is one of the more impressive offenses I have seen in a long time when playing together.
Hopkins bound Koelsh and Syracuse bound Fusco have been very impressive thus far on D. I really like Austin Grahms play between the pipes as well. Kid has been fun to watch.

  6. Laxx says:

Wow 4 OT games in Suffolk D2 yesterday! I was at the RP BBP game. Nick Strano was a force the last 3 minutes, RP down 12-10, dodged from up top scoring lefty to make it a one point game, then next possession finding Nick LaSalla on the crease for the tying goal at 10 seconds. Great job by Rocky Point. Very young team coming off a 3-13 season last year.

  7. Press Box says:

    John Jay-8
    Mahopac-6

    Yorktown-16
    Somers-7

Purple and Green night in the land of the Red Rage Elephant

  8. Syracuse says:

Yorktown now at No. 18 in the Inside Lacrosse/Under Armour national poll. Darien fell to 19. Garden City remains No. 1.

  9. sect101 says:

Nice to see Yorktown back in the top 20 – Well deserved after last nights performance – exciting team to watch.

  10. slacrosse says:

    Jay 11 Pac 7
    Town 13 Somers 9

  11. Relax says:

2-1 Pelham after 1. Nothing like last nite. Very sloppy play. Sect.1 lax is going to shine at Somers tomorrow. Way to ratchet it up a notch ‘town! Some teams might have played their best game of the yr, but there’s more to come Fr the Green & White. Stay focused on the task at hand

  12. Relax says:

WP ties it at 2 w/2:01 left in the half & pick-up an emo Pelham wins the FO scores & pick-up an emo! How bizarre! WP wins the FO & they pick-up an emo!! That’s 3 emo’s in a row & twice the shorthand team wins the FO! Also 2 of the penalties came as the team getting fouled was scoring! Strange! 3-2 Pelham at half

  13. Relax says:

Pelham scores w/ 4:46 left in 3rd up 4-2 Both goalies played well in the 3rd WP starts the 4th w/ an emo

  14. Relax says:

Pelham scores 1:16 into the 4th WP’s close D was bad on that goal. 5-2 pelham WP’s goalie bails out Bad D time & again but w/7:34 left pelham scores again 6-2. WP has a great opportunity but can’t handle a great feed on the doorstep w/6mins left Pelham scores on an emo w/4:37 left can’t help but feel sorry for WP’s goalie he’s played well 7-2 pelham 3:59 to play. Pelham makes it 8-2 on an emo & WP gets a penalty w/ an illegal hit on the shooter. WP survives & gets an emo of their own w/ 1:39 left again they can’t handle a feed at pt blank range. WP’s needs to learn how to catch the ball. 8-2 final. Should of been closer
