Just a few days after taking over the top spot in the national rankings, Garden City hosts Massachusetts power Duxbury at 1 p.m. Duxbury beat Jamesville DeWitt 10-8 on April 14. JD, of course, is the team that’s beaten GC in the state finals the last two years.
Also in Nassau, Manhasset looks to bounce back from its loss to Darien when it plays at Bethpage at 11 a.m. Bethpage is coming off its first loss of the season (to Lynbrook).
The leading Class A team in Section 8, Massapequa, plays at John Jay, 5 p.m. John Jay performed well in a game against Manhasset a week ago, building an 8-3 halftime lead before falling in overtime.
Niskayuna and Somers renew their rivalry at 6 p.m. at Somers. Niskayuna beat Somers last year after Somers won 10-9 in overtime in 2010.
Niskayuna, which failed to make the state tournament for the first time since 2005 last season, is led by a potent attack that features one of the nation’s top-ranked seniors, Penn State-bound Matt Sexton, and North Carolina-bound junior Luke Goldstock, who already has registered 35 goals and 15 assists this season.
You can watch the premiere broadcast of the game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premiere, you can catch it anytime on On-Demand Channel 614 or msgvarsity.com.
Ridgefield, off to a 6-0 starts, plays fellow unbeaten Summit (NJ) in a high-noon showdown. After Summit beat Ridgefield 10-5 last year, an impressed Ridgefield coach Roy Colsey began employing the zone defense run by Summit’s Jim Davidson. Ridgefield went on to win the Class L state title.
Also at noon, Staples plays at New Canaan in an FCIAC encounter.
In a couple of Section 1 vs. Connecticut clashes, Lakeland/Panas plays at Greenwich at 11 a.m. and Bronxville visits at New Fairfield at 2 p.m.
Within Section 1, Fox Lane visits Brewster and Horace Greeley hosts Harrison in a pair of 11 a.m. games and Pleasantville plays at Putnam Valley at 1 p.m.
Today’s MSG Varsity “Lacrosse Live” game pits a West Islip team coming off a huge overtime win over Smithtown West against New Jersey’s Ridgewood, which opened the season by beating Delbarton in OT. The game will air live on iO Channel 14 and will be streamed live online at www.msgvarsity.com/livecast for Optimum subscribers. Non-Optimum subscribers can watch it on WLNY-TV 55.

Weather shouldn’t be much of a factor during most of the day. The latest forecast calls for a chance of showers late in the afternoon through the evening, but the heavy rain coming our way shouldn’t arrive till well after midnight.

Nice win for Bronxville – 17-8 over New Fairfield. Big test for Bronxville this week at Lakeland.
Since the lacrosse world is bigger than Sections 1, 8 and 11 and CT, NJ, here are a couple of interesting scores from today;
Ithaca 11, Irondequoit 8
Jamesville-DeWitt 13, West Genesee 11
Section 1 weekly rankings
1. Yorktown
2. John Jay
3. Lakeland/Panas
4. Mahopac
5. Somers
6. Brewster
7. Bronxville
8. Suffern
9. Byram Hills
10. Clarkstown South/Eastchester
With potential to shuffle every two games. Section 1 seems pretty volatile right now, Jay was struggling for three straight games before doing well in two games with LI teams that are accomplished this season. Somers beat John Jay but then had two tough games with Ridgefield and Niskayuna. Town needs that statement win and you wonder if they don’t get it, will that affect them going in to the section one championships?
Class A in LI seems like in could be somewhat hard to call. Smithton West has to figure out they are in fact good enough to beat WI. Melville and Massapequa ? Does Massapequa’s loss to Jay mean that their taking Chaminade to O.T. is yesterday’s news ?
Can anyone beat Garden City ? Chaminade ? Summit ? When is Darien vs. Ridgefield ?
Darien visits Ridgefield Tues., May 8th, 6pm at Tiger Hollow Stadium. This week, the Tigers visit Wilton on Thurs., April 26th at Wilton in a big FCIAC matchup prior to the John Jay game on Saturday. And Darien makes its way to Charlie Murphy Field to continue its annual series with Yorktown this coming Tuesday evening, 7pm.
Town/Jay (tie based upon J’s play vs Sett and Pequa)
Somers
LP (couple losses but vs tough comp)
Pac (wins but relatively easy sched so far)
Brewster
Bronxville (relatively easy sched so far–tests to come)
A
LP
Pac
Suff
Mamo
B
Town/Jay
Somers
Brewster
C
Bville
Byrum Hills
Putnam Valley
Pelham
Dobbs Ferry
Pville
Remember this is a Massapequa team that was up by 2 goals in the late 4th against Chaminade before dropping it in OT, by that standard HUGE win for JJ.
Given JJ losing to Somers and JJ playing Yorktown and Manhasset down to the wire, you would have to think Somers has a shot vs. Town on Thursday.
Sorry, Somers D will not be able to stop Huskers O.
Coach Lew cannot win against Town, look at the history!!!
Yes it was a Pequa team that went OT with Cham,it was Cham wosrt game of the yr.
