When it comes to marquee matchups, today is perhaps the biggest weekday of the season so far.
Among the matchups: Darien vs. Manhasset; West Islip vs. Smithtown West; and Rye at Lakeland/Panas.
Let’s start with Darien and Manhasset.
Darien has a score to settle.
Make that three scores to settle.
The Blue Wave’s “Battle of the Sound” rivalry has annually been a highly contested affair.
But Darien hasn’t pulled out a win since 2008.
Darien enters the game 6-0. Manhasset is 5-1. Both are ranked in the Top 20 nationally.
This year’s battle will be played on a (somewhat) neutral field — Boyle Stadium in Stamford.
You can catch it live at 6 p.m. on msgvarsity.com and premiering on MSG Varsity Channel 14 on Saturday at 5 p.m., following the 3 p.m. “Lacrosse Live” game between West Islip and Ridgewood.
In other games in Connecticut today, Staples plays at Glastonbury, Cheshire hosts Simsbury, New Fairfield visits Weston and Joel Barlow hosts Newtown.
Also today, there’s an interesting storyline behind the 4:30 p.m. game at New Rochelle between a pair of upstart programs — the host Huguenots and Irvington. There will be four members of some of the Somers team that won four straight sectional titles from 2000-03 coaching on the sideline – Irvington head coach Drew Werney, New Rochelle head coach Brian Violante and assistants Rob Smith and Jon D’Ascoli.
In some of the other Section 1 games today, Mahopac visits Hen Hud, Rye plays at Lakeland/Panas (at Lakeland High School), Somers hosts Brewster, Kennedy Catholic visits Put Valley and Fox Lane plays at Byram Hills.
The Nassau County slate is highlighted by a 4:45 p.m. game between two of the top contenders in Class A — host Syosset and Massapequa.
West Islip and Smithtown West, who played an overtime game in last year’s Suffolk County Class A final, square off at 7 p.m. at Smithtown West.
Also in Section 11, Ward Melville plays at Sachem North.
Before we close for today, in case you missed the news yesterday, Garden City has taken over the No. 1 spot in the latest Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse High School Power Rankings.

People have spoken of how the Wave have pointed to Wilton as a revenge game this season. The Manhasset game is right on that level among opponents for Darien this season; the senior class is very focused on going out with a win against an always-tough Nassau Co. powerhouse. The Indians seem vulnerable with one of their best playing through injury, Ryan Mathews. Yet they’ve already shown that the program is still one of the best on LI and the country.
Both teams will rely on stout defenses to be reliably efficient and keep the score low. If the Wave can keep it close late, putting the ball in the hands of #4 will make the difference. Good luck to all.
Darien 8 – Manhasset 6
Game time is 6pm at Stamford’s Boyle Stadium. Proceeds from the admission fee go towards the Wounded Warrior Foundation and Stamford Youth Lacrosse.

Cold Spring Harbor will be their 1st test. See you at Darien Manahasset game tonight. I am thinking Sett in 2 OT’s 9-8.
Put Valley leads Kennedy Catholic 2-1 after one.
It’s 5-2 Put Valley at the half.
7-2 Put Valley after three
12-3 final
Mahopac leads Hen Hud 7-1 at the half.
Final: Mahopac wins 14-2
About the only battle Hen Hud won today was at the FO x. Both offense and defense struggled. Come on boys! Step it up!
Bobby D is dominating the game clearing & scoring 1-0 ‘sett
1-1 Darien after 3 mins
2-1 ‘sett 7mins left 1st
3-1 ‘sett on an emo ‘sett’s outplaying Darien I’d be surprised if they lose. Darien’s goalie keepin it Fr being worse
3-1 Sett after 1
Somers beat Brewster 7-4. Sick game in goal for Chris cousinnn
‘sett’s close D playing well Darien’s had the ball all of the 2nd but can’t get shots on the net & when they do ‘sett’s goalie saves Em, emo comin w/ 8:51 left. Darien’s penalties are hurting them. Sett blows the emo. Timeout Dariens ball 8:04 left in half 3-1 ‘sett Darien needs a score off this TO
Matheis gets a goal when ‘set blows a clear. Darien scores again to even it at 3 we got a game
4-3 ‘set but Darien comes back w/ matheis to tie it at 4. Set scores to make it 5-4 w/ 1:51 left in half Shootout in the making Timeout ‘set 1:39 left. Darien’s goalie playing well
IMO Set goalie Molloy is the one stealing the show. Close to double digit saves i think
St. John the Baptist 10, Kellenberg 5…final
5-4 Sett Half
‘set calls Timeout w 17secs don’t score off both Timeouts 5-4 at half. Darien’s goalie keepin it close
LP 11 Rye 3 … yeh boys
Set kills one penalty & gets another but Darien throws the ball OB. Set’s goalie playin unreal Bobby D is the best player on the field. Darien trips him & set scores. 6-4 set
Matheis scores but set comes right back 7-5
7-6 Sett end of 3
Darien squanders an emo Bobby weaver scores to make it 7-6 he’s got a hat trick at least. He’s having a great game for Darien 7-6 after 3 both teams ramped it up a notch. BarnBurner!
Weaver scores again. Could be the player of the game. He assists on another Darien takes the lead & the momentum 8-7 great battles all over the field incredible game!
Weaver scores another goal! 9-7 Darien scores again 10-7 great turnaround. Never thought it would go this way Weaver & the goalie should get game balls 10-7 w/ 1:30 left. It’s pretty much over!
Darien wins 10-7. I seem to remember Joe picking Darien to win 9-7 on MSG Varsity on Monday. Nice prediction Big JL!
Joe;
I hate to be a party pooper but can you either eliminate all these meaningless predictions posted or create a separate space for them. These predictions are completely irrelevant, serve no purpose and only clog up this site for readers looking for actual scores. I think the only people interested in the predicted scores are the ones that write them. I for one am happy to see the game played on the field and not on the internet. Thanks.
Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Hey buddy, the predictions are all posted well prior to the game. If you mix them up for real scores than you have problems no one here can help you with lol. The predictions are fun to read and one of the main reasons I come to this blog well before the games start. Notice too I used the word “fun.” That’s what sports should be all about. Get with the program!
Come on – if someones writes “Manhasset 10, Darien 9” at 9:08 am the day of the game or the day before it’s obviously a prediction. I guess it wouldn’t hurt if they wrote “Prediction: Manhasset 10, Darien 9” but I don’t find it confusing at all. Obviously once the games start the scores are updates. Hellooooo.
So lets see. Predictions “clogged” the site for you when you were seeking scores??? Really? How is that possible when the predictions ended around 10:30 AM!!!
Please just ignore this site and go to games like you said.
harrison beat pleasantville 6-5. the harrison goalie had a great game
Huge win for Darien, Congrats to them.
Congrats Darien
Nice effort Darien. Congrats from John Jay.
Great win for the Hudson Valley/Connecticut region vs. “Strong” Island, especially coupled with John Jay’s strong effort and outplaying Set for 3/4 of the game on Saturday.
Now we can turn our attention to WI vs. SW. It’s 4-4 in the 3rd qtr
SW leads 5-4 early in the 4th
Great defensive battle!!
Nice effort by the young close D of West.
Headed to OT, 6-6
WI forced OT with a goal in the closing seconds of regulation.

Great crowd on hand at Boyle Stadium to witness this annual “Battle of the Sound” matchup.
Game will be aired on MSG Varsity iO TV Channel 14 – Saturday, April 21 at 5 p.m. following the 3 p.m. “Lacrosse Live” game between West Islip and Ridgewood. The Darien-New Canaan game can be seen on iO Channel 14 on Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Case had a lot of looks and hit a couple of posts, Set goalie made some saves when he shot high. One of Case’s goal was a beaut, breaking down #19 from X and squeezing a bouncer from a tough angle.
Very impressive game. lots’ of passion on both sides
I agree. Especially on Darien’s part. Lots of determination. Joe was spot on when he said on MSG Varsity that Darien’s seniors – Case, Britton, Weaver, West, etc. – would not be denied this time after three years of frustration vs. Set. They are fierce competitors and have been waiting for this game for a long time.
Was weaver #2? If so, had a great goal in 3rd, beating his SSDM from behind with a nice lefty jump shot.
Yes, senior midfielder Bobby Weaver is No. 2.
Byram beat Fox Lane 8-5
Tom Moore scores game winner for WI in OT, 7-6.
WI is an amazing program. Getting very little fanfare this season but look at this. They really have SW’s number even with so many new players.
They really are. I thought SW would take this one, but WI pulls it out in the end. More than makes up for their last second loss against Chaminade.
John Reese scored the winning goal moore assisted it
Brewster loses to Somers 7-4. Very good game from both teams..It was 5-4 at the half , Somers leading. Brewster killed a two man down 3 minute penalty in the 2nd or 3rd qtr. Both Defenses and goalies played very well. Class B playoff should be awesome!!
Brewster 3-1-0-0 — 4
Somers 3-2-1-1 — 7
Brewster scoring:
Nick Dingee – 2 Goals 1 Assist
Liam Daros – 1 Goal
Shane Flattery- 1 Goal 1 Assist
Saves:
Ed Schoening – 15
Somers scoring:
Mike Ashikari – 2 Goals 2 Assists
Alex Corpolong – 2 Goals
Marc Fiocco- 3 Goals 1Assist
Saves:
Chris Cousin -13
Was Erickson on Kevin Cousin?
Erickson and Batemen are the best 1,2 defensive unit in the section. ferrentini, cousins and berardis have all been shut down by these guys. Great sticks great feet and great ability. Yes erickson was on cousins. Chris Cousin however is the lone star of this game. Incredible performance.
Goaltending was the difference here. Cousins was unreal in the 2nd half Brewster easily could have had enough to win and the brewster goalie looked like he was standing in quick sand. Iv never seen a goalie fall backwards on a 15yrd bounce shot. Is this mighty ducks w/ fulton reed shooting?? bad footwork
Brewster did have its chances in this game. Controlled the ball for a good part of the 3rd qtr and reeled off some good shots. Cousins came up with some real good saves.
Nice win for New Ro yesterday 9-7 over Irvington. New Ro looking good early in season.
Pequa – Syosset game anyone have any commeents? I thought Syosset was the favorite? Its looking like Pequa the rising team in 8A. I haven’t seen them but relatives say Goalie very good, #21 great athlete (ground ball machine) and #29 a shut down close D-man.
Say LI any reviews on the team?
Lovely essay, acquired the pleasure of studying
