March will be going out like lion.

In more ways than just the raw, wet weather that is forecast for today.

Some of the season’s marquee matchups are on tap for today as well.

John Jay takes on Yorktown in what has become the unofficial Section 1 regular-season game of the year the last decade.  This year’s game, set for Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m. at Yorktown’s historic Charlie Murphy Field, will be a fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis as we told you on Tuesday.

Yorktown beat John Jay twice last season, including a one-sided win the Section 1 Class B final.

The contest should feature an intriguing one-on-one matchup between two of Section 1’s premier talents – Marquette-bound senior attackman Conor Gately, Yorktown’s leading scorer last season, and University of North Carolina-bound junior Jack Lambert, an impact player for John Jay since his freshman season.

The game can be seen in its entirety on Monday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14 in the Hudson Valley/Connecticut region.

West Islip, winners of four New York State Class A titles the last six years, visits CHSAA power Chaminade.

That game can also be seen in its entirety on Monday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14 in the Long Island region.

Elsewhere on Long Island, Hewlett hosts Syosset in a Nassau County 7 p.m. clash that will benefit Autism awareness.

Woodstick Classic rivals — and 2011 Nassau Class B finalists Manhasset and Garden City — are playing an intriguing doubleheader at the St. Paul’s School in Maryland.

Manhasset takes on Calvert Hall at 11 a.m. Garden City then meets at St. Paul’s at the St. Paul’s School at 2 p.m.

Also of note, Sachem North hosts Washington state’s Mercer Island at 6 p.m.

Loyola-Blakefield, coming off a 12-5 win over Lakeland/Panas last night, continues its East Coast tourwith a 3 p.m. game against Trinity-Pawling  at West Point.

In New Jersey, Delbarton plays at Ridgewood at 1 p.m.

Also of note, St. Augustine Prep, with arguably the state’s premier player in senior midfielder Steve Pontrello, plays at Chatham and Lawrenceville travels to Connecticut to face Choate.

In a Section 1 vs. FCIAC scrimmage, Rye plays at Greenwich at 10 a.m. Also of note, defending Connecticut Class L champion Ridgefield plays at defending Section 1 Class C champ Bronxville at noon.

The weekend’s college slate is highlighted by Sunday’s Konica Minolta Big City Classic tripleheader at MetLife Stadium.  Action starts at 1 p.m. as Notre Dame faces St. John’s. Duke takes on Syracuse at 4 p.m . The final game features a 6:30 p.m. contest between Johns Hopkins and North Carolina. The Duke-Syracuse and Hopkins-UNC games will be broadcast on ESPNU.

  1. WestLax says:

    Predictions:
Yorktown should control today’s game with JJ to much talent up front for town. Schur probably goes to zone defense putting the short sticks on the posts. Should bode well for Gatley who likes to set from X. Town 10 JJ 7.
Chaminade upsets West Islip in OT 11-10. Garden City wins and Sett loses a close one. Impressed with Somers Cousins stepped up in opener. the “B” division should be a 3 horse race JJ, Town and Somers. Enjoy the games.

  2. LI Guy says:

    Prediction: Nade 9, WI 6

  3. Skipper says:

It is not going to be a 3 horse race. If ytown plays to their capabilities they will smoke everyone in the section. Ytown wins today by 8

  4. 495 Lax says:

If Set can beat CH it will be a big statement win and show how underrated Set is.

  5. Conor STATESly says:

Yorktown’s Attackmen are already playing up to their potential in the few scrimmages I’ve seen them in, hard to see how any defense in the section can keep them quiet. Yorktown will start off the season with something to prove.
    Yorktown 12 John Jay 5

  6. Old Rugger says:

Town too loaded this year. I look for them to make some noise in the states. Town 11 JJ 4. Somers and JJ fight to see who get to lose to Town in sectional finals.

  7. Lax Novice says:

I like Yorktown over Jay by a small margin in a defensive, tactical, low-scoring game. Y-7, JJ-5

If Manhasset plays it tight with Calvert Hall I wouldn’t be surprised. Let’s go with CHC 9, Manhasset 7.

I was impressed with West Islip’s defense last week. Defenses are ahead of offenses this early in the season. WI-8, Cham-7.

    Good luck to all.

  8. LI Lax says:

Nearing the end of the third quarter, Manhasset 5, Calvert Hall 5

  9. LI Lax says:

I was behind on the time, the game is going into OT.

  10. Conor STATESly says:

Yorktown attack men conor Gately and frank Fusco put Yorktown in the lead 2-1 with 445 in the first

  11. LI Lax says:

6-5 Calvert Hall wins in OT

  12. LaxLessons.com says:

Yorktown and John Jay tied 2-2 after one.

  13. LI Lax says:

    WI leads 3-2 early

  14. Syracuse says:

John Jay leads Yorktown 4-3 at the half.

  15. LaxLessons.com says:

John Jay leads 4-3 at the half. Shawn Smith has two goals for JJ. Frankie Fusco has scored twice for Ytown.

  16. Sec12012 says:

Jj up 4-3 at half.should be great 2nd half

  17. Relax says:

Could be a Big Day for JJ. Bocklet gets a Hat Trick early in a 12-8 UVA win over MD & now JJ is leading ‘town after a half

  18. LI Lax says:

Garden City and St. Paul’s tied at 1 early in game

  19. LaxLessons.com says:

6-6 after three. Conor Gately has three goals for Ytown.

  20. LI Lax says:

    5-4 Chaminade after 3

  21. LaxLessons.com says:

Frankie Fusco scores from just outside the crease. Yorktown leads 7-6 early in the fourth.

  22. LaxLessons.com says:

Joey Raniolo scores for Ytown. It’s 8-6 Ytown with time winding down.

  23. LaxLessons.com says:

    Yorktown wins 8-6.

  24. Sec12012 says:

Great win for yorktown. Those are two best in sec 1 b.However,I don’t think either won could get past li champ.I think york was better last year

  25. LI Lax says:

Chaminade wins 7-6. Scores game winner with 13 seconds left.

  26. JOMO says:

    Kennedy wins Big 15-2

  27. LI Lax says:

SP leads GC 4-3 at half

  28. Old Rugger says:

Town’s fast break/ transition goals and winning 4th qtr groundball/ posession were the differences. JJ Goalie played lights out and Towm had some difficulty getting good shots against the JJ zone in settled play. Teams are much closer than I thought going in. Many of the JJ kids did not see much time last year. Most of the Somers team there taking notes.

    • laxfan says:

Have to agree with everything Old Rugger says. In the end, it was a great game to watch. Both teams gave it their all. Branca was unbelievable in goal for Jay at times. Jay also had some trouble clearing the ball at times and two of those errors resulted in goals for ‘Town in the first half.

      • X marks the spot says:

saw replays of two ‘gift’ goals for Town off JJ turnovers and Purple loses by 2 – Town did not look like they had 16 college commits on their roster this time out, but Marr always has them improving through out season.

Out of section games will be more telling for these two squads.

    • Indian J says:

I came away from the game feeling good about Jay. I expected Yorktown to have some fire power and they do with Fusco and Gately both being very skilled. Branca was great except for one or two clears that didn’t work out so well. Other than that, he played like an A.A . Face offs were about even. What I was looking for was Jay’s settled offense. The past two years Jay was prone to drops and throwing the ball away-they didn’t do that at all yesterday. They moved their feet and the ball and got good looks on Town’s d. If they continue to improve, they could have a shot against that team. Yorktown gets nice no look passes in close range and can shoot very well. It should be a fun season to follow.

      • Geepers says:

As usual Indian J – well said. Both teams will improve, I’m certain. Only thing I think I learned is that Jay is closer to YTown than I thought they would be. Who knows come Memorial Day if/when they meet again.

  29. Sec12012 says:

    Ridge-bronx score?

  30. Beleef says:

These are the two best teams in B by FAR!!. Brewtser , Rye may be the next level. But no-One is even close to JJ-Yorktown in Section 1 at all.

  31. LI Lax says:

    GC wins 9-6

  32. sec1Lax says:

    Greeley beat Byram Hills 8-4

  33. Observer Lax says:

How bout this one from NJ? Ridgewood beat Delbarton 5-4 in five OTs.

  34. Laxtime says:

Nice showing by Set against a Calvert Hall team (granted overrated by the Baltimore lax media groupies) but still ranked No. 1 to start the season.

  35. Vikings Lax says:

    Cl South beat Harrison 6-5.

  36. Jersey Shore Lax says:

Ridgewood/Delbarton lower scoring than you’d like to see but both teams were really getting after it – great lacrosse for a purist of the game.

  37. SirLaxalot says:

One of the best days for games in a while. Thanks for the updates all.

  38. Lax says:

Mamk over Fox Lane 8 7 in OT.

  39. slacrosse says:

Congrats to Town on the win.

After J’s good showing in the Darien scrimmage and this close loss to Town, gotta put them as a much closer 2nd to Town in Class B then a few weeks ago!

  40. slacrosse says:

Was down in Baltimore. Great lacrosse, particularly the Sett/CH game! Despite the OT loss Sett looked very strong and at least the equal of Calvert Hall Dunkjvak (sp), Sett’s pole was a beat at D and strong at FO. Goalie was very tough as well.

Thought GC’s play was a little loose letting a down SP team hang around for a while. After holding SP scoreless on a 2 man up situation, GC got the momentum back and scored a few more goals.

Great seeing this NY/Balt double -header which hopefully will be an annual thing.

  41. Old Rugger says:

say sla how will rye be this year? What are the strenghts?

    • slacrosse says:

After graduating all of last yrs starters except one (Stern at attack) this season’s team will start a mix of soph, jr, and sen. Solid players and some will definitely be recruited among this group. Right now Stern will play “Varsity Club” at Richmond-should go D1 in a yr and I believe there may be another sr going D3.

In particular FO will continue to be very solid with Santangelo (soph-OM as well) and DiPalma (sr) taking turns. Goalie is solid as well with White (jr).

Kids are well coached and the team will be competitive. Right now in Class B, place them in a cluster with Somers and Brewster and below the top niche of Town and Jay.

  42. Laxtime says:

    Wow. What a weekend.

  43. ytownalum says:

Yorktown needs to go back to the old school jerseys. New Nike ones just don’t fit in with the Yorktown look

    • Indian J says:

When was the last time they had a uniform change ? I feel like they had those old school ones for decades .

      • ytownalum says:

They have had those jerseys forever thats the reason they should not change them. Every player that has come through the program has worn some form of those jerseys. No need to change them. Wish gloves or helmets were donated because there was nothing wrong with the jerseys the mismatched helmets are a bigger fashion crime for town.

        • Geepers says:

JJ guy here, and couldn’t agree more. Mystique in those old jerseys. Now they just copied JJ with those fancy Nike uniforms.

  44. Hop says:

New Jerseys are donated by the Carcaterras

  45. ?????????????????????? says:

I SECOND IT GO BACK 2 OLD SCHOOL JERSEY.

    • lacrossegeek says:

I agree. The old school jerseys kept the yorktown tradition going. New ones don’t. I don’ think Charlie would approve.

  46. rlaxfamily says:

Can you imagine Mr. Murph getting involved with what the boys are wearing? Lacrossegeek I don’t think you are from Yorktown. Mr. Murphy would tell you to work at it until you get it right, then to do it again. Donations are donations and if a school district approves the donation then so be it. I believe this dontation may have come directly from NIKE. I guess the companies are trying to get to the teams like they do at the college level. With that said, who gives a crap wha they are wearing. Play ball!
