Some teams take small steps when it comes to improving.
For Fordham Prep, the 2011 season was more like one giant leap.
After finishing 9-11 in 2010, the Rams went 13-7 last season and advanced to the CHSAA Class AA downstate final, where they fell to Holy Trinity 10-8.
Fordham Prep appears to be primed for another run to the title game in 2012.
Offensively, the Rams are led by one of the region’s top scorers, Tufts University-bound attackman Ben Andreycak.
The defense features Fairfield University-bound junior Logan Williamson as well as senior Jon Lazar, who excels as a longstick midfielder.
Like Williams, the 5-foot-8, 140-pound Lazar will be playing at the next level. He’s committed to Roger Williams College in Providence, R.I.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Jon on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose RWU because I’m interested in going on to study either finance or law and they have very solid undergraduate programs for both majors. I was very impressed by Coach (Marty) Kelly and his program during my visit to the school. I could see myself contributing to their defense.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was looking at Clark University, Catholic University, Marymount and St. Michael’s. I was fortunate enough to visit all of the schools and thought they were all very good programs with great coaches. It was a difficult decision to make.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Defense is a team concept, but I would like to think I bring speed and aggressiveness to the LSM position.
What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
This season, I would like to continue to work on improving my understanding of my team’s defensive strategy. I would also like to continue to improve my stick skills. I feel as though there is always something I can work on to improve all aspects of my game.
Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
I started playing lacrosse in fourth grade so I have had several coaches who have taught me many invaluable lessons that have helped me develop as a player. I really began to see improvement as a player in eighth grade under coaches Pat Coleman, Scott Baugher and David Chang. Each summer, I played for Drew Wendol, the Hastings head lacrosse coach, who is a great teacher.
During my two years on the team, I have developed a tremendous amount of respect for Coaches (Len) De Lucia, (Justin) Henry and (Ryan) Gorup. Coach De Lucia has been immensely supportive and Coach Henry and Coach Gorup have taught me defensive strategies that will stay with me throughout my college career.
What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in last summer?
I played for Greenwich Youth Lacrosse during the spring season and the Connecticut Chargers in middle school during the summer.
During the summer seasons of my high school career I played for the NYC Hitmen under Coach Justin Henry. Last summer, I attended Lars Tiffany 300 Camp at Brown University as well as Peak 200 at Springfield College. Both gave me the exposure that led me to RWU.
