If we had to pick a theme for lacrosse news in the month or so following National Letter of Intent Fall Early Signing Week, it would be this:
Sophomores take center stage.
The accelerated recruiting pace has led to a steady stream of verbal commitments from the members of the Class of 2014.
The latest came last night as Greenwich High School sophomore Jack Harrington announced his intentions to play his college lacrosse at Duke.
Harrington, a right-handed defenseman, was a target recruit of many of the nation’s top programs.
The 6-foot-3, 208-pound has ideal size to go along with strong skills. (They are on display in his highlight film, which you can watch in Harrington’s LaxLessons player profile.)
But another attribute Harrington has is the potential to continue to get better – and a big reason for that is that he’s a coachable player – something both Greenwich coach Scott Bulkley and Harrington noted (in the Q&A with Jack on his commitment that follows).
“Jack is one of the smartest players I have ever coached,” Bulkley said in our report published last night. “His lacrosse IQ for his age is really unmatched. “
Now, let’s hear from Jack:
What were the main factors in your decision?
Duke has the perfect combination of high level lacrosse, great academics and I loved the coaching staff. I felt like it was the right fit on every level.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited and strongly considered UNC, Michigan, Princeton and Yale .
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My being coachable and my effort at all times. I would describe my style of play as aggressive.
What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
I am constantly working on all aspects of my game. Right now, I’m working on my off-hand and clearing.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I started getting invited to showcases early in my freshman year.
What were some of the big summer showcase events you’ve competed in the last couple of years and how did you do at them?
I attended both the Jake Reed and Showtime Camps this past summer and then went to the Jake Reed fall camp in Charlotte a few weeks ago. The level of play was incredible and really helped me to raise my own game.
