The Prime Time travel lacrosse program has established a strong connection with the Division III collegiate program at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
For starters, Prime Time director Nick Daniello played for the Ducks.
Prime Time defenseman Anthony Grasso of Fox Lane has committed to play for Stevens.
And now, so too has another Prime Time player, John Jay senior Matt Ferentini.
Ferentini is a 6-3 lefty attackman with good strength and speed.
Here’s a Q&A with Matt on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Stevens Tech?
From the minute I got onto the campus, I felt it was a great fit for me. Stevens offers me a terrific academic opportunity in a very cool town just across the river from the greatest city in the world. I was also looking for a school with a strong tradition of success in lacrosse that would give me the chance to compete at a high level of play and hopefully contribute to a national championship and Stevens clearly offers me that.
The fact that someone I really admire and respect, Nick Daniello, also went there and had nothing but great things to say about the school also was important. And finally, (Head) Coach (Gene) Peluso and (Assistant) Coach (Matt) Madalon were really enthusiastic about their program and made me and my parents feel at home and welcomed.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Franklin& Marshall, Roanoke, Fairfield, Dickinson and Cortland. I visited all of them except Roanoke.
What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
To be successful in college, I will need to increase my strength and speed. I will also have to continue working on my off hand shot.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think my biggest strength as a player is that I’m a scorer. It might not always look pretty, but I have a knack for getting to the goal and finishing. I try to be aggressive with and without the ball and can create my own shot, but I always have my head up when I’m dodging and love making that extra pass to an open teammate.
What players have helped influence you as you made your way through varsity?
John Jay has such a great tradition of so many outstanding players, but guys like Kevin Stockel and Bob Crossett are two I really looked up to and helped me a great deal. Also when I was younger, Mike Bocklet was also a strong influence.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
After my sophomore year I started playing with more confidence and had success against a high level of competition in summer ball. I went to a lot of recruiting camps and played in all the summer tournaments I could and eventually was recognized by some coaches.
