Colgate University-bound senior midfielder Forrest Walter and John Jay are looking to defend their Section 1 Class B title today at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Yorktown. This is John Jay’s eighth straight sectional final and Yorktown’s 32nd straight.
It’s time.
Time to crown our first sectional champions.
Section 1 and Section 9, you’re up.
Today at Suffern Middle School, two teams, Lakeland/Panas and John Jay, will be looking to repeat as Section 1 champs.
One other, Bronxville, is making its first title-game appearance.
Yorktown, making its 32nd straight title-game appearance, is looking to avoid losing in the finals for consecutive years for the first time since 1976.
Byram Hills hopes to win a title for the first time since 1987.
Section 9 also features some interesting storylines. Show the increased level of depth among teams, Minisink Valley, which went 14-2 and beat two Section 1 teams, did not advance to the finals, losing to Warwick Valley 9-8 in the semis.
Don’t forget, you can check out the entire downstate New York sectional schedule by clicking here. For the brackets for the state tournament, click here.
So let’s get it going, gang.
As always, be sure to check in with score updates and your thoughts on what you see out there during what promises to be a memorable day.
Before we get to the rundown, we have a quick programming note. You can catch the Section 1 Class A title game on Sunday at 3 p.m. on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optium). The Section 1 Class B championship game will air on Saturday at 3 p.m. on MSG Varsity.

As if all that’s not enough, are some real good matchups in Long Island.
On Hofstra University’s North Soccer Field, an intriguing Section 8 semifinal doubleheader starts with Massapequa vs. Syosset at 3:30 p.m. in Class B, followed by Manhasset and Wantagh at 5:30 p.m. in Class B.
Hofstra is also the site of the third Flyers vs. Friars meeting at 7 p.m. at Shuart Stadium. We’re talking – obviously – about Chaminade vs. St. Anthony’s for the CHSAA title. Chaminade is looking to complete its first three-game sweep of St. A’s since 2006.
Should be a fun day. And a memorable one.

Pac by 2 as don’t think LP has the defensive depth to win this one.
Town by 2 as don’t think JJ midfield has the speed to keep up with towns. Though I think JJ’s defense has improved more than Towns over the season.
Bville by 3 over BH. Near and McCormack are the two best players on the field, but I like BH’s strength of schedule, they need their goalie to play well.
Pequa by 2
Sett by 1 in a close game
Friends by 3
Gately could be the real key to a Town win.
Bville/BH
Good point. BH does have a good goalie in Larrebee. Gonna need to be on. Know Bville has some legit offensive weapons but have no clue as to the quality of their defense. Bville favorite but if Larrebee is on and BH can score enough goals, could be close.
BH can take the Ville, but it will require long possessions on the Off end to make Ville poles work hard and get good looks. Ville does not have a very good D and can get sloppy on clears. BH has to slow the pace on O when settled.
The ville O is a three headed monster, but not a lot of depth. If two of those three break loose, the BH goalie (who is very good) will need to stand on his head to keep BH in game. BH poles will need to check drive and dish from below and, more importantly, D-mid skills to contain the push from up top, one of the ville mids has a laser from up to 15 yds.
Mamo D could match up and got a lot of goals in transition along with game winner off a sloppy clearing pass. Bville has not played a tough schedule and it will show in a close game. Still think they pull it out (9-7) on top-end Offensive talent advantage, but would not be surprise if BH wins a close one 8-7 on better team D and some opportunistic O.
Good luck to both teams.
@Lax Games
How wrong you were.
On HSSD Joe picks Gately & Prunty as keys. They are the point guards, I believe was the comparison.
Personally, I see Schuldt & Mabus as the keys for Town & Caffrey for L/P. Finishers all, but they do need the ball. So if Prunty & Gately gets the assists it’s on. I’m way more confident that town pulls it off. L/P needs a shootout. Town wins! L/P Pac to close to call!
Bronxville should win & this could be the least competitive game, BUT if BH plays a Great Defensive game it could be close! Advantage the ville but not by more than 3.
Looking forward to some close games!
will there be anywhere to view the game on the internet?
As much as I would love to see a Jay win, since it would be a nice achievement after such a tough season with all of the injuries, I just don’t see it happening. Too many second half letdowns. Town by 3-4.
Pac comfortably by 5
Bronxville is legit, denies BH it’s first championship since I was in High School.
I don’t see any of these teams getting by the LI Champ, but I still believe that a Section championship is still a great accomplishment for these kids.
Aside from Manhasset not being in “C” anymore, I sense that LI “C” is “down” this season. If it turns out that Bville (assume will win today) has a very strong defense to go with its offense (we won’t be able to fully judge this from today’s game) then the stars may just be aligned for them to have a competitive game with LI.
Jay and the Senior-leadership pull out a close one 10-9
Who or what group decides state playoff bracket?I’m not a rocket scientist but why do sections 1 and 2 get free ride into quarterfinal against one another?Isn’t the idea to have the best teams play later rather than earlier?Put 8 on top then 11 on bottom. If they both win then the “LI championship” is semifinal. If they lose then so be it.
ok.no need to delete my comment or w/e happened.just throwing out there what I think is fairest format for downstate side of bracket thats all.Have a good day Joe,it’s gotta be one of your favorite as it is for me.Class A-LP by two.B-Town by one in thriller.C-Bronxville by a few.

Final
Final-Pac 7, LP 5 according to blog
score?
Pac wins 7-5
Mahopac wins Section 1 Class A title, 7-5 over Lakeland/Panas.
Impressive showing from Pac’s defense.
Just one late goal for Caffery, Prunty held scoreless
Was Pac shutting off both caffery and prunty? Zone? If they held them to 1 goal between them playing man that is extremely impressive?? Actually very impressive either way.
L/P barely had the ball much. Heart goes out to their defense that played phenomenal, but when any team has the ball that much it’s hard to pull out a win.
LP ran a zone the whole game, they learned the hard way in the first game that they could not play Pac man to man.
Let them enjoy the win while they can….no way they will take regionals!!
Wow Laxfan, how about some support. Last year after you beat us in the semi’s we still wanted you to do well in regionals.
They played man. Both teams played good D. LP defense had a great game for three quarters. The long time of possession in the 4th tired them out. Parrillo #24 did a great job again shutting down Caffrey. Verde #28 and Fetzer #6 did a great job as well. Hynes #25 did a great job keeping Prunty to 1 goal. Pac D is one of the best in Secion 1 , if not the best. Congrats boys, you are a fine team.
Congrats D-Pac. I was in attendance but I was not wall ball balling obviously. Watching the Mahopac fans, I would have loved to have gone at it with them. Suffern Lax 4ever <3
Thanks Boy. Yes it would have been fun playing your team. Good luck next season. Bring the flag to our field, lol.
Pac was man to man the whole game, they played a great game both on O and D. Pac D is very good, holding down a potent LP offense in both games this season. Pac O very patient against LP zone defense, good controled possesions. Kudos to LP defense who played a much better game this time around. Pac offense got 7 goals from 6 different players. Pac goalie was outstanding, they are a very balanced team.
I’ve been around the section I lacrosse scene for a long time, and it was nice to see a Mahopac v L/P final again. Brings back a lot of memories from the 90’s, when these two schools would go at it year in and year out. The way the game played out was similar to how they played out 15 to 20 years ago as well. Mahopac was very deliberate and methodical in how they played offense, and it worked, L/P had very few possessions in the game (sometimes your best defense is a good offense). Seemed like the Haddelands took a page out of coach Corace’s playbook from years past, when they would win big games by very low scores by maintaining long possessions. They were also very athletic and able to out ground ball L/P in key spots, especially on face-offs. I thought the adjustments made by the L/P coaching staff from the last game, to this game, particularly on the defensive end, were masterful. Their defense has been struggling all year, and to come out and play they way they did, in that game of all games, was very fun to watch. I’ve found over the years (in my opinion of course) that Lindsay and Garcia do more with less, than anyone else in the section, year in and year out (I would also put the Dooley’s up there along with them) It’s been refreshing to see coaches who are able to get the most out of what they have, and find ways to get their kids to compete at the highest levels, in the biggest games. I tend to be more “old school,” which means I found this game very enjoyable, and loved watching the “game within a game” taking place between the two coaching strategies. Best of luck to Mahopac moving forward, they have a special group of talented seniors, which is always tough to contend with. All in all I thought L/P had a great year considering the amount of youth on that roster, coupled with the inexperience as well. They lost a bunch of one or two goal games, against some of the better teams in NY and CT. They will be tough to handle in the years to come.
PAC played smart. Methodical O held the ball for long periods. Good D both in close & midfield stymied LP’s potent O. Alot like what D1 lax playoff games have become
Great defense in this game, but it was more about Mahopac holding the ball for long periods of time and L/P never having it on offense. Too many offensive turnovers by L/P cost them in the end. The broken stick goal was the back breaker, tough way to give up a goal. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of that rule, don’t understand why a kid or a team should be penalized for defective or broken equipment. Oh well, congrats to Pac, stall ball has definitely been the lax theme of the week.
The stall has been a theme in the lacrosse world since last year’s NCAA tournament. ND singlehandedly made it to the finals running a “burn” offense, while also having a shutdown defense/goaltending. It didn’t stop there though. Look at Cuse this year. How many times were they called for stalling in the first quarter of games this year? I could probably name a handful. And it was Cuse of all teams. Probably the most fast-paced offensive team of the past 20 years. The entire game is slowing down so much. I always thought the shot clock idea was a terrible one in the past, but I’m starting to really wonder now though. No need to go off on too much of a tangent though.
Congrats to Pac though! As a Pac alum, I couldn’t be happier for the players, coaching staff, and their families. They’ve done a helluva job this year. Now they gotta keep the momentum rolling into the state playoffs. Shen knocked us out last time we won the Section. Time to get some revenge (barring they win the game vs. Section 9, of course). Get it done.
Maryland was stalling, not Cuse.
Cuse got called for stalling in the first half of that game at least once. And they got called for stalling about 5 times in the first half of the ND game during the regular season, among other times. Every team stalls now, even when they don’t have to (ie. late in the game with the lead). Stalling has become a major part of the game, and coaches are using it as a tactical tool. It is what it is.
Crazy – those two have been lights out as duo this season, as has McCormick and Near for B’ville. Very surprised – props to the Pac D and the coach’s game plan. Wonder if BH if planning that same kind of D against B’ville.
Goaltenders for both Mahopac and Lakeland/Panas had exceptional games and should be commended.
score of the John Jay vs Yorktown game?

Gately unassisted. It’s 6-1 Yorktown.
6-1 Gately 0:15
Half
Jay fans are whining about stalling as Mabus burns clock. Town calls TO to set-up a score & Gately gets it great coaching. Joe was right…Gately’s came-up big so far 6-1 LOVE IT…but what about all the injuries? I know we’re gonna hear it! LOL
Ha – Town was up 1-0 when the first “injury” comment came in on another blog, with running commentary on the Section 1 games today.
6-1 Town half
6-2 Walter 7:53
Schurr makes halftime switch, puts Lambert on faceoffs for John Jay. Forrest Walter scores for Jay and it’s 6-2 Yorktown with 7:53 left in the 3rd.
This is a game of runs……lots of lax left to be played!
JJ gets the ball on a procedure call to open up the 2nd half & burn 2 mins w/ no O. Who needs to stall when they do it for you. Make it 4 mins. Too funny 6-1 w/ 7:53 they score 6-2. Walter unassisted. Who knows maybe a goal every 4-5 mins will work if town doesn’t score again. Mabus & town on the attack JJ gets the ball & scores 6-3 a Lil bit of a comeback Morris from Lambert
6-3 Morris 5:05
Brendan Morris on back-door cut from Jack Lambert and it’s 6-3 Yorktown.
This game is far from over, so Yorktown fans better chill a little.
Cuse – just curious, when you posted this, were you referring to the blog comments or fans in the stands? Cause I can asure you no fans in the stands thought this game was over at halftime, or at 6-3…. or even 10-5. Remember, we were “Syosseted” not too many years ago….. Any many of us witnessed Cornell fall to ‘Cuse at Gilette Stadium.. It ain’t over till it’s over… :o) Congratulations to my ‘Town Boys! Well done!
LTL,
I was referring to on the blog. I had a 10-7 Town win in my mind earlier in the week, but wasn’t solid on it. I kept telling Joe I felt Yorktown had one run left in them and considering they went 0-6 against the best teams on their schedule the only way to truly salvage this season was to win the section and beat (I’m assuming) Garden City. I think Yorktown will be a handful to deal with in the state semis. I still think they will lose, but it will be a representative effort. Then again, anything is possible and maybe Yorktown is peaking now. Impossible to know. Either way, the status quo remains: Yorktown in the state semis is the benchmark of what’s generally been acceptable for the program. Maybe this team catches lightning in a bottle and pulls off the upset in the semis. One never knows. I’m by no means confident they will, but there is no doubt last night was a very positive sign, beating John Jay.
6-4 2:33
John Jay’s Lobosco makes it 6-4 Yorktown with 2 minutes left in the 3rd
Wow JJ playing great now. Bounce passes, quck sticks 6-4 2 mins left . Town needs to score Schuldt is the sniper awesome from Mabus 1:46 left 3rd this is cool!!! 7-4 now win the FO
Schuldt answers, from Mabus. It’s 7-4 Yorktown with 1:46 left in the 3rd
7-4 Mabis to Schuldt 0:46
Weil gets his second, stick-side, but Mariano answers top side and it’s 8-5 Yorktown after 3.
7-5 Weil 0:22
8-5 Mariano 0:4,9
8-5 town end of 3 on last second goal by town
Town won the FO but Gately missed a pass & lost the ball JJ scored to make it 7-5 but Mariano finally breaks through for town 8-5 going into the 4th. I was waitng fir Nick to score. It’s tough to keep this from becoming a shootout, but town needs to win FOs & be methodical. That’s just what they’re doing shooting backing up the shots 1st 2mins of the 4th & gately feeds the sniper. Schuldt has a great shot & a hat trick 9-5
Schuldt from Gately. It’s 9-5 Yorktown with 9:40 left in 4th
9-5 Schuldt from Gately 5:45
sec1 has it from here
10-5 Quigley 8:08
Quigley makes it 10-5 Yorktown with 8 minutes to play …
Set 10 – Wantagh 7
11-5 Ty Schuldt 5:53
Schuldt scores 4th. Yorktown up 11-5 with 5:53 left.
12-5 Mabus from Gately 4:25
Brian Quigley gets in the act unassisted 10-5. No stalling here. JJ gets the ball w/ 7 mins left. They burn some clock & give it up! I LOVE IT. Schuldt scores as he’s being fouled his 4th see ya JJ 11-5 5:30 left make it 12-5…but what about the injuries Mariano from Mabus
Lighten up, Francis.
It’s a one sided victory for Town. Jay, you overcame adversity and had a great season. Yorktown will have a tough road in the state playoffs.
no one is whining or saying anything about injuries. Jay had a great season and Town was the better team, leave it at that
You stay classy, San Diego
As a JJ Blogger and a KC blogger. Congrats to a solid Town Team! Good luck with GC / Hunt etc. As for you Relax all the best as my mom taught me.
Mariano — 12-5 Yorktown.
13-5 Gately from Mabus 3:39
Gately from Mabus. It’s 13-5 Yorktown and I am officially stunned.
14-5 Siliano from Mabus 2:49
Joey Sialiano makes it 14-5 Yorktown. Mabus has 6 assists.
Mabus to Gately great fakes. He gives JJ’s goalie a clinic on faking b/4 shooting 13-5 becomes 14-5 when mabus assists.

FA Seaford score?
B’ville vs. Red Hook should be interesting. Both on top of their Section with relatively the same weaker schedule. RH 14/17, BV 21/50 – But Section 9 is weaker in general so . . . .
I don’t see Red Hook beating the ville. Red Hook had two losses both to sect9 A schools, Valley Central who got beaten easily by TZ & Pine Bush who lost soundly to Nyack. I think the ville would beat both TZ & Nyack. It won’t be Red Hook that knocks out the ville. A LI or good upstate team like Salmon River are the only teams that can stop the ville if they keep playing like they did tonight. They’re peaking at the right time.
Congrats to BVX on a great season and way to represent Southern Westchester Lax!
Best of luck vs Long Island!
Congrats to Pac, Town and Bville. Keep winning!!
As a JJ fan I have to say that Yorktown looked very, very good tonight. They are really well coached, have great discipline, and play real well together. They also have a lot of young kids on the team – which bodes well for their future. Good luck in the States, you guys played great and deserve the win.
Congrats to John Jay on a good season and making it to the finals.
Lastly – congrats to Ranagan for making All American and to Chris Bocklet for HM – very well deserved.
On to Baltimore for me!
They must not have paid much attention to LI. I don’t even think Town has a shot against Garden City. After watching the Set vs GC game earlier this year, I think GC could hang with some college teams. Maybe Set can upset them in the Section 8 Finals, but I don’t think Town can hang with them either. Definitely be rooting for Town as I was today, but I just can’t see any way of them beating GC.
Third times a charm for St Ants. Back to Back to Back. CHSAA triple A champs..After the 2nd loss to ‘nade Coach Keith told them they’d do it & they did. GREATEST WIN TODAY
Ditto lax insider. Congrats to Pac Town and Bville go get them!
Quick look:
Section 1 should easily run thru Section 9.
Up in Albany the only real challenge I see vs Section 2,and a very tough one, will come in Class A vs. Shenendahowa who has already beat Nisky.
Then on to White Plains to meet our “friends” from LI. We all know the enormous challenges to face in Class A (West Islip, Ward Melville, others) and B (Garden City or Manhasett). But in Class C Manhasset is out and hear traditional “C’ powers like Cold Spring Harbor are somewhat down this season. Should still be a formidable opponent but Bville could have a reasonable shot.
Sla,
Nisky isn’t what we’re used to seeing, but still very good. Shen is beatable. If Mahopac plays the patient game they played yesterday they’ll be right there. I smell OT.
Yorktown’s season hinges on playing the game of its life at White Plains. Manhasset plays GC tonight so we’ll see. I figure the winner gets to White Plains. I’d give Yorktown a better shot against Manhasset because Garden City is stellar defensively. But, then again, Yorktown has traditionally risen to the occasion against GC in the state semifinals. Maybe Joe can give us the all-time head-to-head, but I think Yorktown leads it something like 6-3 or 5-3.
Bronxville and all of Class C is clearly a notch below B and A statewide, but, like you said, that juggernaut C team on the Island has yet to really show itself. That may still mean the best of what it does have is still light years ahead of whatever Section 1 has, but I’d agree Bronxville should be in the game against whomever they play. Bronxville has had a great season, but the boys are separated from the children from this point on and if Bronxville is to sustain itself going forward it must schedule tougher games than what it had this season. One loss to Mamaroneck and the basically beating up clearly inferior Section 1 programs is a start, but it’s not what’s needed to win at the state tournament level, mostly because the Long Island schools play much tougher competition within their own sections.
Either way, Yorktown gives Section 1 the best shot to do something significant, but both Mahopac and Bronxville, should they get to White Plains will certainly not embarrass themselves. At least that’s the hope.
Yeah with Bville it’s much more of a guess as to how they’d do vs TOP competition because they haven’t played anyone (let’s say the Mamo loss was a complete aberation). No one has seen how their O or D would stand up at this level?? Worst case Bville loses but not in a blow-out.
Agree with you on Town. There you have the data points of them coming within 1 goal to power houses St. Anthony and Smithtown West, 3 goals to Darien, tough games–that’s saying something. Gives you something “meaty” to factor in for a possible close game or upset.
Pac/Shen should be tight. Town beat Shen 8-7 earlier in the season. I want to be very wrong here but at White Plains I fear it could be a very long day for Pac.
Slacrosse, having seen one of the better teams on LI Class C ( Seaford) and Bronxville beat BH, I think Bville has a excellent chance to get to championship weekend. I don’t like to compare scores but Seaford beat BH 8-6 with BH losing 17-18 face-offs. And it was still a close game. Cold Spring Harbor beat Seaford a couple days later 7-5, not too impressive. Now-after watching Bville take BH apart last night-Bville was extremely impressive in all areas( faceoffs, passing, swim dodging over 5ft 5 soccer players) it was a show and it should have been. Bville has players going to ND and Gtown and its rumored that the older Grass boy is committing to UVA soon. I would like Bville bring it home for Sec 1.
Bville was very impressive last night for sure. Would love to see Bville or any Section 1 team beat a LI team at White Plains. I saw Somers beat Cold Spring Harbor and CSH had skill but did not look special–at least for a storied LI program. Since then looks like they’ve won a number of games in a row.
Hard to say how good LI C is but do feel like Bville has the best chance to beat a LI team at White Plains.
