Sophomore attackman Kevin McDermott and ninth-seeded Hen Hud visit No. 8 Horace Greeley in a Section 1 Class B opening-round playoff game today.

It’s go time, gang.

This is the first full day of the sectional playoffs in sections 1, 8 and 9. And the seedings were unveiled last night for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs.

Among the more interesting sectional matchups today, No. 9 Hen Hud visits No. 8 Horace Greeley. Also in Section 1 Class B, the Harrison-Rye rivalry hits the lax postseason as the Huskies visit the Garnets while 2010 Class B semifinalist Brewster plays at Fox Lane.

The Class C opening round, originally slated to start today as well, will now be played tomorrow. In action yesterday,Put Valley beat Keio in a Class C outbracket contest 16-2.

In Section 8, two-time defending Class C state champ Manhasset, now playing in Class B, beat Bellmore-JFK 16-6 in an opening-round game.

The other opening-round Class B games in Nassau are set for today.

In Suffolk, of the Class A opening-round games on tap, the most intriguing matchup pits ninth-seeded East Islip at No. 8 Smithtown East.

You can look ahead to the rest of the downstate New York sectional and state playoff schedule by clicking here.

Meanwhile, the seedings for the FCIAC tournament were announced last night, with first-round action starting on Saturday, May 21.

In case you weren’t tuned in with us late last night when they were announced, Darien, to no one’s surprise, is the top seed. Defending conference champion Greenwich is No. 2. Ridgefield, the 2009 champion, is No. 3, followed by New Canaan (4), Wilton (5), Brien McMahon (6), Staples (7) and Fairfield-Ludlowe (8).

Saturday’s opening round games will be: Ludlowe at Darien (1 p.m.); Staples at Greenwich (time TBD); McMahon at Ridgefield (2 p.m.); and Wilton at New Canaan (time TBD).

The FCIAC semis are set for Tuesday, May 24 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at McMahon. The final will be Friday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. at McMahon.

  1. BH says:

The North Salem BH Game has already been moved to Friday to allow NS to get a day of practice in as the rain yesterday wouldn’t allow it.

  2. lax4life says:

Good morning all, and thank you Joe for all of the info. FYI – the lead photo above is of HH sophomore attackman Kevin McDermott, not to be confused with senior attackman Kyle Fanning. Kyle and Kevin are Hud’s two leading scorers this year and will be one of the keys to their post-season success. Good luck to all of the teams playing today and lets hope mother nature cooperates. Go Sailors!!

  3. Old Rugger says:

Have not seen half the teams play but it is the playoffs and anything can happen especially in the 8v9 and 7 v 10 brackets. Let the fun begin.

    WP 9 CS 5
    LP 15 CN 4
    Wapp 12 Sdale 7
    Mamo 8 NR 6

Hen Hud 11 HG 10 Good Game
FL 7 Brewster 6 Good Game
    Rye 14 Harrison 5
    JJ 16 Echester 4
    TZ 12 O 5

KC 11 Croton 10 Good Game
Haldane 9 SH 8 Upset have to pick one with the way the seeding is.
    Irv 6 Ard 4
    DF 9 PR 4
    Pel 8 Bcliff 5
    Bvill 13 PV 6
    BH 9 NS 7

  4. CPC says:

Anyone know specifically what time the Jay/Rye or Ytown games will start at on Saturday? I heard Somers is at 1pm. Probably going to cut right into the NCAA games which is a bummer.

  5. YanksJetsSJU says:

CPC-I saw on MSG Varsity’s site, Yorktown will be playing at 2 p.m. on Saturday. It didn’t have a time for John Jay yet.

  6. Gonzo says:

Is something amiss in the sectional seedings?

Based on the criteria outlined in the 2011 Section One Lacrosse Tournament Booklet, this spring’s Class C tourney selections and seedings do not make sense to me. Some other criteria must be involved, and I wonder if anyone has any insight on this.

According to this year’s Tournament Booklet, the seedings are to be determined under a formula to gives each team 4 points for every win, an extra two points for every victory over a team with a 0.750 winning percentage or better at the end of the regular season and one point for every victory over team with a winning percentage of 0.500 to 0.749 at the end of the regular season.

It also stipulates that to even qualify for the sectional tournament, teams must have the following:
    –25% of Overall Record
    –25% of League Record
    –25% of Class Record
–25% of Class, and above, Record

As I calculated, the seeding points for each team, in order of actual seeding, comes out as follows:

    Pleasantville 68
    Bronxville 67
    Dobbs Ferry 59
    Sleepy Hollow 51
    Byram Hills 52
    Irvington 41
    Pelham 46
    Kennedy 42
    Croton 37
    Briarcliff 39
    Ardsley 32
    North Salem 39
    Haldane 34
    Pearl River 24
    Putnam Valley 15
    Westlake 13
    Edgemont 16
    Keio 12

Thus, except for the top three seeds, almost all of them seem to be out of line with the stated criteria

Also, as Put Valley, Westlake and Keio had regular season records of 3-13, 3-12 and 3-12, respectively. What was the criteria that allowed them to qualify? Now I am in no way arguing that they should have been left out but based on the Section One stated criteria, they didn’t seem to make the cut.

Again, I am just wondering if anyone has insight into criteria the seeding committee used that was not listed in the Tournament Booklet?

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

Divide points by games played to get their index. And don’t forget to disregard out of state games…

  7. LI Lax says:

    Connetquot 14-4
    Bay Shore 13-6
    Northport 15-6
    EI 13-11

  8. Bill says:

    Gonzo
you then divide those pt.s by the number of games that counted…. out of state games do not count so some teams divide by 16, 15, or 14 games… that division will give you the index. then put them in order. hope that helps

    • Gonzo says:

thanks Bill. That would explain the Irvington seeding as they only played 14 games. But most of the other teams played 16 games and I didn’t see any out-of-state matchups among the Class C schools

  9. Bill says:

u need to win 25% of games either in league, class, section? pretty easy to qualify. i think a team with one win in a four team league would qualify. hard not to make it.

  10. ReLAX says:

WP 1 CS 0 unAssisted 8:45 1st slick play picked up a long cleaing pass as he entered fr the sideline

  11. ReLAX says:

2-0 WP 2nd goal by mike trapp fr ctr mid he’s the main scoring threat on the field 2mins left 1stqtr

  12. ReLAX says:

Great qtr by trapp doing it both ends of the field. 2nd qtr starts w/ him winning the FO kid does it all for the tigers. Lots of turnovers by CS. They can’t do much on O when they do maintain possesion. TO CS 9:30 left 2nd

  13. NYmike says:

Taking C seedings from Gonzo – and leaving them at that so as to include all games played, as SOS and RPI do count games played out of state (as far as I know). Then multiplying these “gonzo” numbers by SOS weighted avg and RPI value, the seedings then become.

    Bronxville
    Byram Hills
    Pleasantville
    Dobbs Ferry
    Pelham
    Sleepy Hollow
    Irvington
    Briarcliff
    Croton
    Kennedy
    North Salem
    Ardsley
    Haldane
    Putnam Valley
    Pearl River
    Edgemont
    Westlake
    Keio

Is that not more in line with what we know to be true?

  14. ReLAX says:

TO WP 8:40 left if CS could catch the ball on passes they would of had a chance but they’re a turnover machine so far. They’re starting to play better. WP goalie saves a nice high to low shot. Tigers come down & Nick Leone scores w/ 6;40 3-0 WP. 6mins left emo WP they don’t convert. CS misses s goal on the doorstep w/ a bad shot. They’re starting to get some chances & finally cash in w/ a goal by Joe Bazzetti 3-1 w/ 3mins left in the half

  15. ReLAX says:

CS does nothing w/ 2 EMO’s in the last 2 mins of the half one was a 1min penalty one was 30secs which they’ll have 24secs remaining on. See if they can cash in on it in the 3rd 3-1@ half

  16. ReLAX says:

They just announced Trapp is the all-time leading scorer in WP’s lax history & he won ConEd player of the week. Congrats Mike!! C’S converts w/ 4 secs left in emo 3-2 goal by Joe Bazzetti #1 CS WP answers right back unassisted by Jeff Avery 4-2 10mins left In the 3rdCS has shot saved right in front, but score @9:20left in 3rd 4-3 WP loses the ball & CS ties the game Steven Morris unassisted good game now 8mins left 3rd

  17. ReLAX says:

CS playing much better on O WP’s offsides 30secs 5:09 they fo nothing w/ the emo & #22 WP scores unassisted dan Broderick 5-4 WP w/ 3mins left 3rd they’re on the attack again the MO is back w/ WP they score w/ 2:25 Mike Trapp 6-4 CS back to throwing the ball away on clears WP controls but can’t cash in 6-4 WP end of 3

  18. ReLAX says:

Trapp wins FO & Broderick scores w/ assist fr Leone 7-4 tigers 10 left in the game. CS needs to find the net, they’re on O for 2mins w/ nothing WP regains possesion & calls TO w/ 7:52left

  19. ReLAX says:

CS w/ holding 30 sec tech. & guess who scores? Mike Trapp w/ assist fr Avery 8-4. CS hung for awhile played well into the half, but got sloppy & WP cashed in. It’s 9-4 unassisted by Broderick WP’s still has possesion w/ 4 mins left. This will be a great place for the Downstate finals! TO CS w/ 3:16 left time to start doubling w/ the goalie if they can score, but this game’s over. Trapp, Broderick & WP’s goalie all played very good. Great team effort as well. CS has a min left & give it up. TO WP 9-4 I’m out

  20. ReLAX says:

    2-0 L/P in 1st 1:12

  21. ReLAX says:

L/P all over CN Caffrey scores 2 in 30secs 4-0 7:20 left in 1st make it 5-0 this is turning into a joke halfway thru the 1st Caffrey gets his third in 5 mins L/P scores again 7-0 5:14 left in 1st

  22. ReLAX says:

    8-1 3:13 to go 1st Caffrey again at least 4 maybe more 9-1 2:04 10-1 Prunty 1:36 left 1st qtr

  23. ReLAX says:

Caffrey again that’s at least 5 but he might have more 11-1 the clock helps CN by ending the 1st this is over I’m out

  24. Joe Lombardi says:

Greeley leads Hen Hud 3-1 late in the first quarter.

  25. ReLAX says:

Caffrey’s out of the game after 1. Everyone’s playing today for L/P

  26. ReLAX says:

CN scores as I walk to the car. 11-2 if it gets any closer it’ll be because the starters for L/P were coming out after 1 qtr

  27. LI Lax says:

9-1 Northport over MC at half.

  28. laxdog says:

Another good showing from our friends over the Tappen Zee bridge!! Can’t wait til those powerhouse mounties get knocked out. Can’t play Rockland teams all the time!!!

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

There are 3 sure things in life: death, taxes and Mounties victories! LETS GO SUFFERN! Can’t wait to see winner of Mamaroneck/North Rockland at Suffern Middle School Saturday!

  29. Joe Lombardi says:

Fox Lane and Brewster are tied 1-1 after one

  30. Lax-for-life says:

Rye 9- Harrison 1 at half

  31. Joe Lombardi says:

Hen Hud ties it at 6-6 on a goal by long pole Joe Fraietta with 23.9 seconds left in regulation We’re going into OT.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Hen Hud wins the opening face-off of OT then Phil Siegel scores the paining goal. Hen Hud wins 7-6 and will play at Somers in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 1 pm.

      • ReLAX says:

Game of the Day so far! HenHud’s FO man is the man!

        • lax4life says:

All of the Sailors stood tall today. Sophomore D-Man Joe Fraietta’s tying goal was instant highlight reel material. With less than a minute left and Greeley with possession deep in Hud’s zone, Fraietta stripped the attackman in the far corner, ran coast-to-coast, dodged through the midfield and finished top shelf. With one tick left on the clock, goalie Elliot Astor made a clutch save. Soph Matt Ledwin clamped the opening FO in OT and after a huge scrum Fraietta picked up the GB and the Sailors called a TO. Hud then set up behind the Greeley goal. Sophomore attackman Kevin McDermott made a nice feed to junior Phil Seigel who drilled a shot low and away for the game winner. What a finish!! Hats off to the Greeley boys too. This game could have gone either way and arguably Greeley should have won if not for Joltin’ Joe Fraietta’s last minute heroics.

  32. lacrosse 25 says:

    jj score?

  33. Joe Lombardi says:

    Final – Brewster 5, Fox Lane 4

  34. Joe Lombardi says:

    Rye wins 15-3.

  35. LI Lax says:

I’m having a rough day today.

    Lindy upsets Bay Shore 8-6
    Smithtown East over EI 10-7

  36. ReLAX says:

    5-0 Mamaroneck 9:33 left 1st half

  37. ReLAX says:

EMO Tigers 1min slash 6:15 they hit a pipe & NR gets a save all even #26 scores w/ 3:42 left #22 had the 5th goal 6-0 3mins left 1st half. Tigers dominating N Rockland’s goalie getting peppered. Real tough day for Rockland County. 7-0 tigers w/25secs left this is the 3rd team fr Rockland I’ve watched get beat today 7 zip @ half

  38. PV parent says:

Any idea why Section 1 class C opening round was postponed?, but not B and A? I’ve had today’s game (and all the rest of the play-offs, just in case) on my calendar since March. Hard to rearrange my work schedule for what could be the last game of my son’s high school career (or a huge upset!) Drat! And it was sunny today @4:30, but is supposed to rain all day tomorrow.

    • North Country Parent says:

whole C/D schedule was pushed back a day (including Sat to Sunday) because one of yesterday’s play-in games could not be played (hmmm – wonder why?) PV got their game on the “turf” but grass field game could not go.

  39. LI Lax says:

    Connetquot 20, North Bab 4

  40. ReLAX says:

Tigers’ D dominant NR can’t do much on O. They’re having trouble getting the ball over midfield when they do tigers D snuffs em both the Goalie & close D are playing very well still 7-0 5:30 offsetting personals

  41. ReLAX says:

    8-0 4:16 left in 3rd make it 9-0 3:04 left

  42. ReLAX says:

10-0 & NR’s goalie’s making saves this would be way worse if he wasn’t 3rd qtr ends w/ another tiger ck that sends a NR stick spinning in the air. Awesome defensive effort thru 3

  43. Laxxer says:

John Jay 15 to 5 over eastchester

  44. ReLAX says:

They’re goes the shut out & NR gets an emo w/ it but the D holds 10-1 w 7:21 left

  45. Lax Guy says:

    Scarsdale Wappingers score?

  46. ReLAX says:

Tiger’s goalie just on fire since I got here. He gives up an emo goal w/3:06 10-2 but overall close D, LSM’s & goalie played great! Starting O’s been out for the Tigers for most of the 2nd half. EMO for NR w 8 secs left 10-2 final. Good luck on Sat boys!!!!

  47. laxin says:

Joe, is there a website to see an update bracket for the section playoffs as they go along? Thanks

  48. Joe Lombardi says:

A quick note on Hen Hud’s 7-6 overtime win over Greeley. I didn’t include in any of the updates. Greeley had a chance to win in the final seconds of regulation but goalie Elliot Astor made a last-second save, forcing OT.

  49. Joe Lombardi says:

Because Hen Hud’s prom is Friday, it looks like Saturday’s Hen Hud at Somers game will be moved from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

  50. Joe Pasquale says:

    Joe,

I understand that class C & D are classes that you don’t like to report on as they don’t hold a candle to the John Jays, Yorktowns, and SOmers of the world. However, how about a score on Westlake and Edgemont?

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Joe – You must be new to this site.

So first off, thanks for coming by.

Our score updates are a collaborative effort. Scores of readers at games throughout the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region report updates here each and every day, including games from all classes. All scores are encourages and welcomed.

      Hope that clear things up.

It should be noted, however, that there is no Class D in lacrosse.

      In any case, welcome aboard!

    • laxforfun says:

OUCH !!!!Maybe no has given Joe an update – he is awesome but really can’t be everywhere. Where are the Westlake and Edgemont fans sending in updates…

    • North Country Parent says:

C/D postponed until tomorrow as noted above somewhere

    • ReLAX says:

ReLAX there will be plenty of C scores tomorrow

    • slacrosse says:

      Joe Pasquale,

Your “understanding” is way, way off and I’ll assume it’s because you must be a new viewer. Laxlessons has always treated Class C with the same respect and coverage as A and B in terms of reporting scores, stories about teams, player recruiting announcements, etc.

      • Joe Lombardi says:

Thanks, slacrosse. Now that Joe has been caught up to speed, I think we can all expect to see him pass along score updates of his own right here the next time he’s at a game. Maybe even tomorrow?

      • NYmike says:

Agreed – Pasquale needs to get on board the best lax blog in the region, keep those westlake/edgemont updates coming in the future – seriously.

        • Joe Lombardi says:

No question, NYmike. I’m not sure what team Joe roots for, but whatever team it is, we should all expect updates and info for the duration of that team’s season.

I think what’s special about what we have going here is that this a forum for so many perspectives each day.

      • Old Rugger says:

        slax,
        Absoulutley Joe is the best.

  51. Rave Lax says:

    Final score…

    Scarsdale 11 Wappingers 9

  52. Joe Pasquale says:

Joe read your stuff for ages and agree you do a great job. Accomplished what I wanted to in getting the edgemont score. However, at the same time believe that if there was equal time spent in other divisions reporting on things other than just scores like games and those players who are as talented as some of those in A and B you’d help bring attention to some of the amazing talent in all of section 1.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Appreciate that, Joe. But do know, this is not like the days where what was covered was dictated by those covering it, if that makes sense. This is an open forum. Please use it.

If you think a specific player or team deserves notice/attention, tell us about it in as much or little detail as you see fit. That’s what this is all about.

I am a part of it, but just that — a part of it. And a lot of what I write and talk about is influenced by what folks are talking about here.

    • LoveTownLax says:

J Pasquale, you just aren’t correct, and are whining a bit… Joe covers Class C plenty…. Putnam Valley, Bronxville, Byram Hills, Rye (prior to this year) Pleasantville, Briarcliff, Kennedy etc etc etc have gotten a lot of coverage over the years – their games, their players, their coaches, their stories… Not every team in C gets equal coverage, same in A and B, but this is a Lacrosse blog and the power teams get the most press… Just like Peekskill, Mt Vernon, etc for basketball, New Ro for football, etc. Fans can post as much as they wish, so maybe you need to light a fire under YOUR team’s fans!!!

      • ReLAX says:

Never put Peekskill ahead of the Vern even if it’s alphabetically correct. Hey Joe L how’s that for a diverse forum..we even slip a Lil knights BBALL in. I love the measuring stick comments. They had the Vern up there w/ the Yankees the other day. Love it

        • LoveTownLax says:

ReLAX – too senstive re: Mt. Vernon Basketball v. Peekskill.. :o) It never bothers LTL if someone says Jay and Town….. etc. enjoy the games this weekend!

      • ReLAX says:

Oh & bye the way…Town Lax is the only Lax program that even comes close to what the Vern has done. I love being at the Murph looking @ your scoreboard. That’s more a lax field than it’ll ever be a football field. It’s the real deal & my pals @ Mt Vernon know I’m a Town laxhead.

  53. LoveTownLax says:

Joe – LTL’s comment is “awaiting moderation?” yikes! is this personal? :o) Where will you be on Saturday?

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Not at all. It’s actually a new way we are experimenting with for more comments to go up even quicker at a time. Because of a high volume of visitors and comments, there was a bottle neck and this should prevent that. (Fingers crossed.)

Not sure about Saturday, yet. Right now, I’m working on tomorrow’s schedule. Lots of good games to pick from on Saturday to be sure.

only kidding Joe, but it surprised me when it appeared! Always good to try something new.. Yup, lots of good lax going on, but at least with the varied start times you should be able to catch a few good games on Saturday. And now even more opportunities with the shifted Friday/Sunday games!
