A.J. Pesacov and the Arlington Admirals visit John Jay at 11 a.m. today.
Summit of New Jersey has the longest active win streak in the tristate area at 52 games. And counting. And for the second straight time, an FCIAC team will try to end it. The Hilltoppers host New Canaan at 2 p.m. at Investors Bank Field (26 Butlers Parkway) in Summit. Summit overtook Ridgefield 10-5 at home this past Saturday.
Speaking of the FCIAC, the team regarded as the favorite to win the conference, Darien, is back in action for the first time since falling to Haverford in the much-awaited showdown between the nation’s top two ranked teams.
The Blue Wave renew their annual rivalry with Yorktown today at 4:30 p.m. when they host the Huskers, who are coming off a tough loss themselves, 12-11 to Mahopac in double OT. Two of Darien’s main challengers — Greenwich and Wilton — are getting set for a big game tomorrow at Fujitani Field in Wilton.
That’s among the topics we discussed in our weekly tristate lax segment on MSG Varsity, Channel 14 (Optimum). We also unveil this week’s “Under the Radar” player and he’s from a Section 1 team, and take a look at how Johns Hopkins-bound Ryan Matthews of Manhasset was groomed to take over faceoff duties from Syracuse freshman Ricky Buhr. You can check it out by clicking here.
Also of note, John Jay hosts Arlington.
In Suffolk, rivals Mount Sinai and Shoreham-Wading River square off under the lights at Mount Sinai at 7:30 p.m.
In the prep-school ranks, Brunswick plays its first game since upsetting Salisbury (then ranked No.5 in the nation) when it faces unbeaten Gunnery. Salisbury hopes to bounce back when it plays at Westminster.
Before we get to today’s schedule, just a quick note that we will indeed be keeping an eye on the sky. There is a chance of severe thunderstorms in the region this afternoon. (Scroll down to the link for the most up-to-date weather forecast.)

I dont like Arlington’s chances at Jay. I figure it will be a similar score to the lakeland arlington game. 14 to 3…give or take a goal or two.
Ytown is in a world of hurt this week, first lose to pac now have to play Darien? Then Smithtown? Good luck
Hey at the very least will toughen em up for playoffs
Good luck Town
Not sure that I agree…Town played a heck of a passing game vs. JJ and really showed what they could do. PAC game was sloppy and nothing near as controlled at the JJ game. Based on the two games and as different as they were, I think Town has the talent and the coaching savvy to get the kids back playing like did at JJ. Maybe they need the lights and the hype but I hope not.
I agree that Darien and smithtown west will be tough games. They also have to travel to darien today. don’t expect yorktown’s offense to get of the bus before the first half is over. I would say the score will be about 6 or 7 to 3 at the half. the only thing going for town in the smithtown west game is that they will be home. maybe the huskers faithful will help carry them through. all these tough games will only get town more prepared for the section 1 tournament though…so it will be good experience. their schedule is extremely agreesive and the kids on the team hopefully appreciate it.
Yo mccrack & upstate: that’s why they play the games if Mabus is dominant @ middie & Trevor & Fahey can slow Matheis & Gregory we got a game. Fusco & Raniolo need to come up big right off the bat. Sialiano needs to play much better than he did vs ‘Pac. I gotta bounce I’m in downtown preppyland sending this. Gotta get to the HS. Go TOWN!!!
JJ will have no problem with Arlington 16-4
Cl North at North Salem game has been postponed bc the field is unplayable.
now THERE’S a surprise
Town in the next 10 days has Darien, Smithtown West and Chaminade. They will have there hands full, but you need to play this type of Schedule to get to the next level, also big problem looks like Ty Schuldt will miss his third game for Town.
for sure
Very similar situation for Darien, who in the next 11 days will play: Yorktown, Brien McMahon, Manhasset, St. Anthony’s, and Niskayuna. Like Town, Darien will also be missing one of its top middies, Henry West, who was injured in the first half of the Haverford game. He and LSM Justin Shaw (Loyola), who has not played yet this season, will most likely miss all of these tough games.
What’s the deal with Darien? Overrated?
Just a horrible, horrible performance — even worse than the second half against Haverford. Darien needs to wake up, because the schedule only gets tougher next week. Midfield looked lost w/o Henry West.
John Jay 11 Arlington 8
Jay 13 Arlington 4
Darien 13 Yorktown 6
Summit 10 New Canaan 6
Farmingdale over Foothill early and often
Fox Lane over South
In regards to Jay, Both the 16-4 and the 11-8 predictions of cam newton and scooter respectively are a possibility. No doubt that Arlington will be bringing their best effort and playing hard. If Jay plays hard, it will be closer to the former.
IJ,
OK, maybe FDale is way better then Long Beach but FHill did beat a pretty good Long Beach team a few days ago.
I think 11-6 is a good prediction, just that Fdale will be up quickly. I think they will surprise Foothill.
Jay 12-4
Darien 13-6
Summit 13-5
Farmingdale beats Foothill 11-6
Fox over South
Jay up 10-1 at the half, Jay did a lot of subbing in the second period, I think it was 7-0 or 8-0 after 1. Daniello not playing, Morris and Caviola still out.
Jay score please??
Final: Fox Lane 6, Clarkstown South 2
How did the goalie JD look for Arlington in Goal what was the final
JD Looked great. A lot of shots on the door step and some big
time saves… cant get em all . D-mids getting burned causing
unecessary slides or even worse..no slide at all.
JJ 17 Arl 11 Final
observations?
Subbing a great deal I imagine more than a comeback ? Was Daniello not playing the entire game ?
John Jay wholesale subs in the 2nd quarter, mixed subs in the 3rd quarter. Arlington “woke up” in the 3rd quarter – John Jay looked like they let down a bit. Daniello did not even dress. Arlington pretty athletic – they are moving in the right direction.
Arlington goalie looked ok, lots of open looks for John Jay. It was 10-1 at the half. 3rd quarter Arlington played well, John Jay didn’t.
Arlington often plays two goalies. Was there a change of goalies at half time?
1st half score vs final sounds like gave Jay a chance to put in lots of kids.
Arlington will continue getting better as they play top teams.
who scored the bulk of the goals for JJ?
Mike Lupinacci 4-3
Brendan Morris 4-2
Forrest Walter 3-3
Jake Weil 3-2
How many shots did each take? Did Chen shoot?
chen had 2 goals
Classy move not to run up the score on Arlington. The person who picked 16-4 would have been right otherwise. Actually at 10-1 at halftime it could have been even worse than 16-4. JJ is backkkkkkkkk
Don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back. The subbing
was not as liberal as others have suggested.Arlington came out COMPLETLEY flat in the first half and Jay was off to the races
with a 10 – 1 lead. Jay called off the dogs a little past the halfway point in the second qtr and the starters quickly came back in early in the second half when the score reached 12-4. First and second half were like night and day for Arlington. They outscored Jay 10 to 6 in the second half.
Im sure most Jay fans would discount
Arlington given the fact that they are a young program that to date has not had a big win over a sectional powerhouse. This will
not be the case for long!
Congratulations to Jay players, coaches, and volunteers who have helped make them a successful program, Arlington is on the way looks forward to joining you.
Was it 10-1 at half? Did the starters come out ? Nobody was discounting The Admirals, rather they were taking credit for a decisive win against them. Town did not have that kind of performance and other section one teams have lost.
Have to say though that if Jay got 10 in the first half without Daniello, at any capacity, it’s good news, provided that Daniello is healthy for the next game.
Jay on fire in 1st half and per coach Nolan best they looked all year. Arlington was equally bad on their end and scared of the jersey. Jay dominated them. Subbing very little on Jay side(schurr’s way)with lanza getting subbed along with pray going to attack. Duffy gave up 3 or 4 in 3rd and Branca put right back in game. Kudos to arlington who jumped on Jay in 3rd quarter. Jay obviously felt game was over came out sluggish but looked great in first half and will be on point come next month. Obviously Daniello would have made a difference but IMHO offense much more balanced and moved ball great without him. Off ball play and lax IQ difference in the game. Admirals making progress and on the right path. They have to feel good about scoring 11 on Jay and not good about giving up 17.
For those of you who felt jay was liberally subbing here are the goal scorers:
1-Weil
2-Walter
3-Chen
4-Lupincacci
5-morris
6-Morris
7-morris
8-Lupinacci
9-Chen
10-B Morris
11-Pray
12-Weil
13-walter
14-lupinacci
15-Lupinacci
16-Weil
17-Walter
1 goal from a non starter for Jay the entire game. yeah they were really subbing?? LOL
you dont really know what you’re saying. Pray did not “go to attack” he started there since daniello is hurt. Also, Duffy is the one who starts and Branca went in and started letting in goals in the 3rd quarter and so they put back in Duffy, not branca.
it’s posts like this one that make me long for the days of newspaper writing by a good reporter with accurate facts. None of which are contained above.
JJ couldn’t run up the score they were playing field hockey not lacrosse. The offense was in the entire game and they couldn’t put them away. The defense opened the door for and made it interesting.
JJ is back? They can only beat mediocre teams.
Well yeah I guess JJ is back to the point they were at…a nice program but not elite statewide.
Back to what they were last year or ever ? They have beaten some pretty impressive programs in the past five years. Even last year’s team beat Syosset and Corning East, were 18-2 without a loss in the section. Im not sure that they’re back or whatever that means but … They have been elite they just are not there right now.
Syosset and Corning East were barely top 100 national teams last year. If that. JJ was elite for one season, 2007. One season does not a program make.
Beat Garden City and Darien in 2006. Beat CWogue 16-4 in 2008 and lost in the state semis to Rocky Point by a goal. They were excellent in 2004, losing a two goal game to a Manhasset team that was number 2 in the nation. Have advanced to the State Semis eight times in their history- although winning only once, it was against a nasty Huntington team.
Can’t watch a big time college game on TV without seeing one of them running around with the ball. Like I said though, they are not there at the moment.
Didn’t the Savs made their teams play tougher schedules?
summit over new canaan 5-0 in first qtr
6-1 halftime
53 and counting final: summit 10 new canaan 2
Good luck Towm. Would luv to see a win.
LI Lax,
Any Foothill/FDale score?
sayville 8-7 over harborfields
Any WI – HHHW score?
Don’t think you have to worry about that one…
3-1 Darien after 1
close Town needs to care for ball in offen end
Darien / Town?
Connetquot over Pequa, 8-7 in OT
slacrosse, will pass along Farmingdale-Foothill score when I find out
Thx
Farmingdale 14, Foothill 5
Thx.
Had assummed Dale is much stronger then Long Beach that lost by 1 to Foot??
5 to 4 Darien 2nd
4-2 Darien after 1
5 4 almost half. Good game.
Mariano with 3 goals for Town. Matheis has 2 goals but has been held under wraps for the most part.
Good 3rd qtr for Darien. They outscored Town 3-0 and now lead 8-4 heading into the 4th.
5-4 Darien at Half, if Town cuts down mistakes they will stay in it.
5 4 almost half. Good game. No Ty Schuldt again. Hurting them but even game so far. Case is awesome.
8-4 Darien after 3
Town making to many mistakes
Darien wins 9-6.
What a shame Schuldt was out. Darien lost 19 of 20 FOs vs Haverford and if Town had Schuldt they win by 2-3 goals.
Laughable statement. Darien was missing Henry West, who is better than Schuldt, as well as lsm Justin Shaw. On top of that they played absolutely their worst game of the season. And don’t let the score fool you; Town got two goals in the last 3 minutes when Darien took their foot of the gas a bit earlier. Outside of the second quarter it was all Darien. On a side note: who is the Town goalie? Not the best shooting performance by Darien but he must have had close to 20 saves.
What’s Darien’s starting first middie line w/hout Henry West who I agree is very good and had to be missed today?
Come on,take your foot off the “BLUSTER” pedal. The more you push the pedal down the worse you sound as a Darien fan representing a great program (i.e “West is better then Schulte”,” D played “absolutely” their worst game of the yr”, , “Darien took their foot off the gas”, D dominated the game except for 1 Q). Both teams had ups and downs with Darien finishing out stronger.
Town’s goalie made some great saves in the first half which held down D’s scoring. D’s goalie made some great saves in second half holding back a few Town goals.
Alright, the foot of the pedal statement is lame in hindsight, but I stand by the other two statements; Darien did not play well at all, and I do think that West is better than Schulte (this is not a knock on Schulte, but West is ranked in the top 40 IL juniors, and is headed to Cornell).
I think this shows Section 1 just has sooo much more parity and depth then the FCIAC and overall is alot better. I mean Yorktown lost to Pac and isn’t even a defending sectional champ and played Darien to basically a standstill without their best or second best player. Look for Pac to put a hurting on Northport!
Yeah…probably not with regards to Pac-Northport. I’m admittedly a Northport homer, but I’m guessing 12-7 Northport.
It wasn’t a standstill…Darien was up 9-4 when they started running off the clock. Also, you can’t just read into one performance, because this was a very bad one for Darien. And Darien was missing it’s best midfielder.
9-6 Final Darien, Town sloppy with ball at times especially 3rd period. Both Goalies played lights out, I did not see to much diff between these 2 teams.
I thought Darien solidly outplayed them all 2nd half! The offense didn’t show for Town til the 3rd was done, too many turnovers. Darien didn’t play that well either, but WAS better, clearly. Yorktown’s got to rally with what they have ahead. They will, they usually do. Other teams have caught-up. I love the way the Town plays everyone they can…NOT LIKE BRONXVILLE!! Get with it Horgan
Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.
Story of the Yorktown/Darien game was the 3rd Qtr. 5-4 @ half Yorktown plays the 3rd w/ NO OFFENSE. Turnovers left and right! Horrible!! The decent defensive effort…wasted. I told Fahey @ the beginning of the 3rd..good job. He scored Yorktown’s 1st goal taking the ball all the way down field unassisted! Being an old crease defenseman, I was happy for him. I thought Koelsch should have covered Matheis early on, but Gregory is quick too. Defense and Sialiano played well. I like the Town, but this could of been ALOT WORSE!! Darien didn’t place shots well, shooting right into Sialiano’s midsection ALOT. Good 1st half but the NO SHOW by the Town’s “O” sealed it. Playing GOOD teams will make them powerful down the road!
Can someone tell me what’s wrong with Schuldt and when he will return? Sounds like Yorktown is missing him desperately.
He’s missed the last two games with a concussion. He hasn’t been cleared yet to come back and play.
Cool. Thanks man.
I was told by some INSIDERS, he sustained a concussion in practice. They need something to ignite the “O”. If they played “tomato cans” it wouldn’t matter but against this schedule…ooFa These days they treat concussions very carefully. I probably played most of HS & College w/ them! I loved to HIT..best part of playing “D” “you got ball,I GOT MAN”
Darien 9, Yorktown 6
Darien 3-2-3-1 — 9
Yorktown 1-3-0-2 — 6
Darien scoring:
Case Matheis 3-0
Richard Gregory 2-1
Jon Magnusson 1-1
Graham Maybell 1-1
Bobby Weaver 1-1
Darien goalie saves:
Dylan Torey 10
Yorktown scoring:
Nick Mariano 4-0
Tyler Fahey 1-0
Justin Mabus 1-0
Conor Gately 0-2
Yorktown goalie saves:
Matt Sialiano 22
Wow! I had no idea Mariano had 4..kid’s a player! Is he signed yet? I know a few D1 programs that could use him. Last year as a Frosh you could see he was special. Maybe he’s next in a LONG line of Bigtime Goal scorers. Nice job by the 10th grader! Congrats Nick! He did play well!!
Great job Darien. Manhasset, St. Anthonys and Niskayuna are on the horizon and you appear to be up for the challenge.
Am I allowed to say great job by Town ? There is indeed parity in Section One, but Town played very well today and made a statement. They are the team to beat in Section One, so you have to give Mahopac credit for doing just that. Many ranking lists have been constructed lately. These lists may make the critical and analytical side of our brains feel more comfortable, but the right side of our minds know there are five teams in section one who could beat each other. All of them have had let downs, and they have also had performances that have people thinking that they have a shot at winning the section. In A, you have L/P, Mahopac, and Suffern ( even Arlington as they improve) who all have a legit shot. In B, its Town looking like the favorite with Somers and Jay being unpredictable and dangerous.
Matt Sialiano. 22 Saves against Darien ? 22 ? All-American type performance at least by the numbers.
Darien will be lucky to get a win against any of these three if they don’t start playing to their potential. Sialiano was good, but the 22 saves is at least partially inflated by some poor and forced shots by Darien.
Have to agree that both teams took too many poor shots–too far out , right at goalie, etc.
Way to bounce back from the Mahopac game..by Matt Sialiano 22 saves..NICE
Ridgefield-Darien 5-18 at Tiger Hollow. BE THERE….
Should be a good one!
at DHS Stadium.
Go Ridgfield and the boys from Superstar!!!
Hey ya want a win but think Town takes some good confidence and “mo” out of this game. And without Schulte!! (But as Fox News says, “to be fair and balanced”,Darien was also missing West, their Cornell bound Middie).
Mariano really impressed me–but more importantly then me, the Smithtown West coach sitting next to me! This was the second Town game he’s scouted.
was that coach keenan? he is an old ward melville guy. he knows what he is doing, to say the least.
Yeah. Seemed like a great guy who you’d want to be coached by.
I’d say both teams will take away some positives out of this game. Yorktown surprisingly stayed with Darien for one half, hung in there when the Wave turned the defensive screws for the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half, and got a couple at the end to make the final score interesting. Young Mariano’s 4 goals is the most by one player this year against Darien, no one on Haverford or anyone else had more and are four more than Kevin Interlicchio managed in last year’s wipeout at the Murph. A much improved Husker team this year, which I guess is what people were saying. Darien got back into the win column against a formidable opponent while working new guys into the offensive rotation and coming up against another hot goalie. Next up a league game against surprising Brien McMahon and then the non-conference week of weeks, Manhasset moved to Monday, St. Anthony Wednesday and hosting Niskayuna a week from Saturday. If that doesn’t get you prepared for FCIACs nothing will.
Red Hook beat Hastings 10-2.
Nyack beat Warwick 11-9.
Section 9 is 3-1 vs Section 1 this week…
maybe schedule a decent team and that record will change. have red hook give bronxville, rye or put valley a quick call and see how they do down there.
It is section 9, they aren’t going to start scheduling the top teams in section 1…
Exactly. Nor would Section One teams schedule them.
you are absolutely right. which is why section 9 is 3-1 against section 1 this week.
Every team has injuries during the year…EVERY team. No excuses. Period. You play the hand you are dealt. And in the case of the Darien-Town game, both teams had injuries. So be it…Darien wins, let’s move on…
Indian J – who are you? You seem to know a lot.
Just voted in the poll… Seems like Darien is weak at midfield which is where games are won … Set 9, Darien 5
I don’t think the score will be that lopsided; even without West, Darien is still better than last year, and I can’t imagine Set being as good as they have been the last two years.
That’s what we thought when Connor English finally graduated, then Drew Belinsky came along and bulled his way to six goals in last year’s 9-5 victory. So who is this year’s Belinsky? Ryan Mathews is going to present a matchup problem for Darien this year, both at the X and with the ball in his stick. Is he the guy to get all of the attention? We’ll see.
Agreed, Mathews has been red hot this year. The Set goalie, who came in cold in the game last year and stonewalled the Wave offense, will also present a problem, particularly if Darien shoots the way they did yesterday.
It seems to me section 1 has lost its swagger as big time lax. Its still big but def not as big as LI, MIAA, Western NY and now even southern CT. Maybe b/c so many more teams are getting better in section 1 or do you think soo many of these kids live on the past and history of a program of the 80’s and 90’s. I have seen many sect. 1 games in my day and feel like 20 year ago section 1 kids were hungry and went out and proved they could play lax. But as we rolled into 2000’s many kids feel like well i go to Town or JJ or mahopac I am better then you but it doesnt seem to be that way. I am just wondering why? How is it that such a Hot bed of lacrosse is having a tough time competing with the rest of the nation (LI, MD, CT, NJ) what happened? You take say the best team overall in section 1 with the most history and prized championships and #’s dont lie. Yorktown’s record in the last 5 years against LI 5-13 against MD 1-1 against CT 3-8. Could it be that the rest of the tri- state area is just as good as section 1?
You must have gotten cut from the JV team.
Hilarious Lax Novice!
Not sure of your point. LI was always better than Sec 1, as in, always – top to bottom. SE CT was and still is about even with Sec 1.
Northrn West always stronger than Southern West and Rockland. The development of Youth programs across the Sec has created more parity among the top and mid tier teams in the Sec.
The difference within the top programs is the quality of coaching.
Agree. Add youth programs as well.
Odd post. I agree with Laxin, not sure even the most rabid Section 1 fan would ever make that statement. And by Section 1, I am basically saying Yorktown, and the random years that Mahopac, Somers, John Jay or LP have a great team.
And as a Section 1 fan, there is no shame in saying that we are behind LI, Baltimore, and Upstate NY. The other point made by Laxin, historically Sec 1 Lax has been about 3 towns about 10 miles wide, just like Baltimore is primarily about 10 or so MIAA schools. Lax on Long Island, meanwhile, is about the whole Island.
I wouldnt even begin to compare Mariano to Interlicchio
Laxin. You are dead on.
Agree totally
Can anyone please give an evaluation of this years Yorktown and Lakeland teams compared to last years squads? How are they stronger/weaker? Any input would be greatly appreciated
Your right the Mariano kid can play with both hands rides very hard and can Run.So i dont think the kid does compare to Interlicchio
