Kevin Cousin and the Somers Tuskers renew their rivalry against Mahopac today at 6 p.m. at Mahopac.

Former Chicago Cubs great and Baseball Hall-of-Famer Ernie Banks famously said, “Let’s play two,” to illustrate his love for the game and desire to play a doubleheader on any given day.

Fans in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference can follow Banks’ credo today.

OK, OK.

It’s not a true doubleheader.

But two of the conference’s premier rivalries will be renewed at different times within a close distance, allowing fans to “Play two.”

At 4 p.m., six-time defending Class M state champ Darien and Wilton, regarded as one of the FCIAC’s top contenders, meet at 4:30 p.m. at Darien. Then, at 6 p.m., and just about five miles from Darien, New Canaan hosts Greenwich in a rematch of last year’s FCIAC title game, won by Greenwich 5-4.

In the Hudson Valley, a pair of Section 1 champs collide as Lakeland/Panas (Class A) visits Putnam Valley (Class C) at 4:30 p.m.

Also, Class A contender Mahopac hosts Class B contender Somers in what’s always a highly contested contest. Last year, the ‘Pac won 11-9 at Somers. This year’s meeting is at Mahopac, today at 6 p.m.

As we get set to run down the slate, don’t forget, as always, gang, to post updates and info on the game or games you’re attending.

  2. SUlax says:

Somers @ Pac is an interesting matchup. I don’t think we really have a great read on what either team is capable of just yet. Somers has the tougher schedule and is coming off a huge comeback win vs New Canaan so they are certainly feeling confident. Pac has rolled since an early loss to East Islip and i really like the production that ive seen from the new kids on offense, defense is much improved as well.

    Thought?

    • sir laxalot says:

I have given this game much thought. The more I think about it the more unsure I become. I guess JJ will edge out the Pac. I really wish I could go to this game, should be a lot of fireworks!!!

  3. slacrosse says:

I’m giving Somers the edge based upon their having played and had some 1 goal losses and wins vs a much tougher schedule then Pac has played up to now (except for Pac’s East Islip game). On the other hand sure lots of wins for Pac have built their confidence. Should be a great game.

  4. Ss1 says:

Massapequa at syosset should be a great game. These two may be playing for Nassau champions. Hear syosset moved another 8th grader to starting attack. Last 8th grader to move up lukavic is a superstar!

  5. laxidasicle says:

joe, summit is now 51 games and counting. they beat west essex 4-2 wednesday nite. thinking of driving out to summit saturday to watch ridgefield try and snap the streak.

    • Big Easy says:

Very little said so far about Summit or Ridgefield. Summit is riding a win streak that dates back to 2009!

  6. LI Lax says:

Smithtown West- Bay Shore has some serious upset potential. Tough for West to get back up and play another good team after the 2 day long OT loss to WM.

Smithtown West 12, Bay Shore 8

  29. slacrosse says:

Pac/Somers great game as expected–thought very even play. Heart-breaker as Pac had the ball with 7 seconds left and ended up in transition/clearing giving the ball back to Somers to tie with 1-2 seconds left! Incredible last second score by Somers to tie and then the OT win.

  30. LAX says:

    Wappingers 17, Haldane 1

  31. slacrosse says:

    Greenwich/New Canaan??

  32. History Lesson says:

Heard Somers 4th quarter and OT was as good as it gets. Somers knew name might be Cardiac kids. Have staged a comeback and either won or almost won in every game (Except Rye ). And a side bar to that in the choices dept for all Check out the Blind Brook scores.
JJ is now more healthy and in a higher gear. Sats Manhasset clash will tell a lot.
L/P Offense is The West Coast version for Lax. Now young goalie is stepping it up. Watch Out!!
Yorktown sputtering a bit, needs to play a big gun to show its real head of the two headed monster.
Mahopac is still very talented on Offense and will be in the mix.
Lets see how our Section 1 guys fair in cross-overs this weekend???

    • D-Pac says:

      History,

As good as it gets if you’re a Somers fan and as horrible a loss as you can get for a Pac fan. I don’t think there will ever be a better win, or worse loss. You shouldn’t lose a game when you get the potential game winner with 7 seconds left and win the ensuing faceoff. The ball should have been held or tossed downfield and the game is over with Pac winning 7-6. To then have the ball thrown in from the sideline with 2 seconds left and scoring was incredible. Like I said, shouldn’t have happened, but it did. Props to the Somers players and especially Coach Lew for making adjustments as he saw fit and for calling the play for the tying goal. Preparation is everything.

  33. JJ 110 says:

    DPac
Sounds like great game.Saying that Pac coaches werent prepared?

  34. jack says:

Brutal loss for Pac and now Town tomorrow…….ouch

  35. slacrosse says:

Apart from whether Pac can raise themselves up mentally after such a disappointing loss (sure they can), they are impressive quality wise and I think they can give Town a competitive game. Aside from some very good offensive players, was particularly impressed with pole #24.

  36. justlaxin says:

Amazing call. Sarcasm. Throw to crease and hope. If you saw it you know. No picks just a throw and a prayer.

    • D-Pac says:

      Justlaxin,
No sarcasm at all. Of course you hope for the best, but smart play taking your big defender Schurr and posting him up. He’s taller than any Pac player. Some thought went into that. Yes, and their prayers were definately answered.
