It’s the first day of spring — and the start of actual games in what promises to be another intriguing and action-packed season in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the NY/NJ/CT tristate region.
Nevermind the fact that many area fields are surrounded with the backdrop of snowbanks.
As always, and fittingly, the hotspot within the hotbed — Long Island — gets things going first.
Connecticut public-school teams, meanwhile, start tryouts Monday.
Temps are expected to reach a balmy 50 degrees for the high on Monday under bright, sun-shiny skies. Nice! But don’t get too excited. The high temp will struggle to hit the freezing mark both Wednesday and Thursday, and there’s a slight chance of snow showers Saturday morning on a day that features some megamatchups.
Among those scheduled Saturday, March 25 showdowns: Chaminade (NY) vs. McDonogh (MD) at Princeton University; Smithtown East (NY) at John Jay (NY); Garden City (NY) at Smithtown West (NY); Northport (NY) at Syosset (NY); Yorktown (NY) at Somers (NY); Corning (NY) at Victor (NY); Wantagh (NY) at Mamaroneck (NY) Briarcliff (NY) at Rye (NY); St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) at St. Dominic (NY); and Mount Sinai (NY) vs. Pelham (NY).
Action on the Island today includes just a handful of openers, including Patchogue-Medford at Hauppauge, North Shore at Baldwin and Riverhead at West Babylon.
