All members of Ohio State’s men’s lacrosse team are safe Monday following a horrifying late morning incident in which an 18-year-old OSU student who injured nine people in a car-and-knife attack was killed after an alert for an active shooter on campus went into effect at Ohio State University, urging students to shelter in place.
The nine injured people were taken to local hospitals, the Columbus Dispatch said.
“Keeping victims in our thoughts & prayers,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers (above) tweeted. “Thankful for all the law enforcement who responded so quickly.”
Facebook has launched its Safety Check feature, allowing people in and around campus to mark themselves as unharmed following the attack.
Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a Somali refugee who was living in the U.S. as a legal permanent resident, ran into pedestrians with his car on campus before exiting the vehicle with a butcher knife and slashing victims, according to CNN. He was shot and killed by an Ohio State police officer less than a minute into the attack, the report said.
Abdul Razak Ali Artan was the subject of an Aug. 25 feature in The Lantern, the school newspaper, called “The Humans of Ohio State.” The story, which originally was published in print only, has been reproduced online. You can read it here.
The attack occurred near Watts Hall at 19th Street and College on the north campus.
