Drew Brennfleck

To say newly named University of Virginia coach Lars Tiffany has been active on the recruiting scene since taking command of the Cavaliers’ program in late June would be an understatement.

Among Tiffany’s most noteworthy recent commits is one from New Jersey power Mountain Lakes, where versatile Class of 2019 midfielder Drew Brennfleck verballed to Virginia, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section,

A two-way talent, the 6-foot, 170-pound Brennfleck, a righty and Long Island native, has a strong offensive game and really excels in the intangibles, including groundballs.

Recruiting abstractNow, here’s a Q&A with Drew on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Strong academics, prestigious lacrosse program with great coaching staff and Virginia’s big D-I campus feel, with lots of extracurricular options.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered Denver and Brown and visited UNC, Duke, Syracuse and Richmond.

Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
Undecided, but leaning towards Business, as my major.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
High effort, two-way midfielder, hard alley dodger with heavy accurate shot and tough in between the lines.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Off-ball movement.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was born on Long Island and started playing in kindergarten.  My uncles played lacrosse at Scranton and Marist and I followed them.  I also play varsity football and basketball for Mountain Lakes.  I also played competitive soccer through seventh grade.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
Laker Future and STEPS Elite.  In 2016, Maverick Showtime and Prep School Showcase.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I want to thank all my coaches that taught me and made me a better player.  In particular, coach Tim Flynn, Matt Kovachik and Mike Kirwan.  I also want to thank my family and friends for all their support.  A special thanks to Sean Seaffer and Ryan Dexter for always being there to work.
