Former Yorktown HS (NY) star Scott Nelson will guide the men’s lacrosse team at Division II Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, NC, Pfeiffer VP for Athletics Bob Reasso has announced. Nelson most recently led the program at Binghamton University and won three Division III national championships as a coach at Nazareth College. He also served as head coach at Brown.
“It’s a great coup for us to get a coach of Scott’s caliber,” Reasso said. “I knew him when we were both at Rutgers. He is a great coach, but more importantly, a great educator. We are absolutely ecstatic to have Scott join our athletic family.”
Nelson spent five seasons at Binghamton and was named the 2014 America East Co-Coach of the Year as he led the Bearcats to their best conference record since 2004 and advanced to the America East tournament for the first time since 2011. His 2015 squad set a program record by scoring 10.7 goals per game.
Prior to coaching at Binghamton, Nelson guided the Marist Red Foxes from 2009-11. His 2011 team finished the regular season by winning seven straight games (program’s longest win streak) and reached the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament for the second consecutive year. At the conclusion of the 2011 season, Nelson was named MAAC Coach of the Year.
Before taking over at Marist, Nelson was the head coach at Brown for six seasons where he led the Ivy League members to a top-10 national ranking in 2004 and 2005. His 2002 squad went 4-2 in the Ivy, giving Brown its first winning conference season in five years. In 2004, Nelson was named New England Coach of the Year.
At the Division III level, Nelson led Nazareth to NCAA titles in 1992, 1996 and 1997. He was the program’s inaugural coach in 1986 and produced 12 NCAA appearances in 15 years, including five national semifinal berths and four straight trips to the championship game. Nelson’s 1996 Golden Flyers went a perfect 15-0 en route to the program’s second NCAA Crown. He never had a losing season at Nazareth and concluded his tenure there with 10 consecutive NCAA appearances and 13 straight seasons with 10 or more wins. His 177-40 record at Nazareth represented one of the highest winning percentages in the nation over that span.
Nelson began his coaching career at Rutgers as an assistant from 1982-85. He is a 1978 Yorktown grad and 1982 graduate of North Carolina State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and was a standout lacrosse player.
“I am really excited to be at a place where the kids are going to get individual attention,” said Nelson. “I am also excited about working with Bob Reasso. I consider him to be one of the best coaches in the country and his passion and enthusiasm as an Athletic Director is unmatched. This is a great opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Scott and his wife Lynne have three sons, Tucker, Jared and Jake. Lynne, a former standout soccer player at Nazareth, was part of the Inaugural Hall of Fame class. Tucker wrapped up an outstanding career at Binghamton in 2015. Jared and Jake are a rising sophomore and freshmen, respectively.
