“Fantastic Lies,” an ESPN “30 for 30” documentary focusing on the 2006 case in which three Duke University men’s lacrosse players were charged with rape, only to have the charges dropped a year later, premieres Sunday night at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

Director Marina Zenovich explores the case’s hot-button issues of sex, race, class and violence, and the turbulent period’s lasting impact on the players and program that were the subject of what became a national firestorm and resulted in a highly-charged legal investigation.

“Fantastic Lies” returns to the night of March 13, 2006, when Duke University lacrosse players threw a team party that ended up changing lives, ruining careers, tarnishing a university’s reputation and even jeopardizing the future of the sport at the school.
