nctitle2 It was a long time coming for New Canaan.

The Rams won a Connecticut state championship for the first time since 2003 in 2015.

New Canaan had lost in five state finals since 2003 (with all the losses coming against Darien or Wilton).

For University of Denver-bound senior midfielder Kyle Smith, winning titles has become habit-forming. Smith is coming off a football season that also ended with a Connecticut crown for the third straight year, with Smith being a starter all three of those seasons.

In lacrosse, Smith is an athletic with superb skills and shooting ability and ideal size at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds.

New Canaan opens the season Saturday, April 2 at Loyola-Blakefield (MD).

Now, here are Kyle’s perspectives on the season.

playerperspective

Your final varsity football season wound up being a memorable one with a state title. What were some of the moments you will remember most?
Without a doubt football has always been important to me and there is nothing like your senior season.

The moments I will miss the most have to be our rivalry with Darien and obviously the three state championships we won.

What have you been doing to get ready for lacrosse season?
Keeping a stick in my hands and shooting with some friends when we have time. Over the winter I will be playing box lacrosse to improve my game overall.

ksmithHow does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
One of our first scrimmage is against Taft which will be fun to play against (Michael) Kraus and (Justin) Meichner(2015 New Canaan grads and prep-school post grads) and our season opener is down at Loyola-Blakefield which will be fun.

Additionally, Brunswick will be a fun game and obviously Darien.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I think Graham Braden and Jack Hoelzer will open some eyes on the midfield this season.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Our depth and work ethic. We are 6 deep at every position with 2 strong goalies, with everyone working hard.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The league is wide open as it always is. Too early to tell. The league has a ton of good players from a ton of good teams so we will see.
