Lakeland/Panas is one of the most established and successful programs in Section 1 (NY).
But in 2016, the Rebels will be looking to re-establish that status rather than simply continue it following a 5-11 season.
Leading the Rebels’ bid for resurgence is senior attackman/midfielder Kevin Prunty. Prunty will be playing collegiately at Siena, the college destination of his brothers Conor and Brian.
Now, here are Kevin’s perspectives on the season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
As a team we’ve been running, hitting the wall and playing outside when the weather is nice enough. It helps not having three feet of snow out there like previous years.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule looks very similar to last year with the exceptions of a few teams. It’ll be nice to be at Lakeland again as our home field.
I’m looking forward to the Murph Cup (Charlie Murphy Cup game against Yorktown) like every year and our annual Shen game (vs. Shenendehowa). All Class A opponents are big games, too. We usually scrimmage Stepinac, White Plains and a four-way scrimmage that varies with the teams.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Joe Cortese is going to have a big season after being out all of last year and I think Griffan Shilland and Sean Makar will step up as rising juniors. Kevin Dykman in the net too.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think our strength will be our chemistry since we only graduated a few kids. Team defense will help and possessing the ball on offense. After our season last year ending early with a lot of losses I think our motivation to change that will be our biggest strength.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
Class A has a lot of good teams this year. Teams like Mamaroneck, Fox Lane, Mahopac and Arlington will all be in the hunt for plaque. It’s always our goal to still be playing by Memorial Day weekend.
