Jason Mauro is ready for a new challenge.
One of the most successful varsity coaching on Long Island will be moving on to the next level.
Mauro, who built Sachem North into a power in ultra competitive Suffolk Division 1 during a highly successful 11-year tenure, accepted a volunteer assistant coaching position at nearby Stony Brook University.
“It was a great opportunity I could not pass up,” Mauro said. “To be able to coach Division I lacrosse 10 minutes down the road from my house and keep teaching is a great situation. Jim Nagle and the rest of the staff have been awesome and I am looking forward to a great season. It is very exciting.”
Mauro’s Sachem North assistant, Paul Benway will take over as the Flaming Arrows’ head coach.
“We have had great coaches, players, parents and administration in the program which has made it grow,” Mauro said. “When Sachem split, we had to rebuild and restore the traditions. We have had great people involved who has helped build the program. This was not done by one person and it will not succeed with just one person.
“It takes a collective group. Guys that I would want to thank are Paul Benway, John Lang and Anthony Muratore. They are loyal, diligent coaches who are teachers first.
“Coach Fred Fusaro, who I have the utmost respect for, told me early in my career that ‘Loyalty and guys who can teach are the most important people to have on your staff,’ and that is what these guys are.
“Along with them and all the players and alumni is why we have been so successful on the field and off.
“I also want to thank the parents who were always supportive of the program. Without them we also would of never been as successful as we have been.
Mauro will continue to serve as a special education teacher in the Sachem School District.
