It all started when a transplanted Long Islander and Yorktown High School teacher Jim Turnbull formed a club team at the school in 1965.

Shortly after, a former Princeton University lacrosse player who lived in town, Charlie Murphy, wrote out a check for $500 he gave to Turnbull. It was enough to outfit the team for its first season.

Since then, of course, Yorktown has grown into one of the nation’s premier programs, with seven New York state titles and Murphy’s home (pictured above), on the west side of town, became a gathering place for players to hone their skills and be mentored by former players and coaches.

This coming weekend, the Yorktown community will be coming together to officially celebrate the program’s 50th year.
