The games were played deep in the heart of Suffolk County — at Stony Brook University — but it was Nassau’s day was Section 8 teams completed a clean sweep at the Long Island Championships Saturday.
The grand finale came when Matt Gavin scored with 29 seconds remaining in regulation to give Manhasset (above) a 7-6 win over Mount Sinai and the Class B title. Manhasset outscored Mount Sinai 4-0 in the fourth.
Earlier, Syosset overcame a four-goal deficit to defeat two-time Suffolk Class A champ Smithtown East 14-8 for its first LIC title since 2008. Mac O’Keefe had four goals and one assist, Alex Concannon three goals and two assists and junior Alex Giovinco had an outstanding day in the faceoff X.
The day started with Cold Spring Harbor pulled away to beat defending Long Island champ Babylon 15-5 for its first LIC since 2006. The Seahawks will take a 16-game win streak into the Eastern state semifinals against Section 1 champ Pleasantville on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Middletown High School. That will be follow by Syosset vs. Nisakyuna at 5:30 p.m. and Manhasset vs. Yorktown at 8 p.m. The winners there advance to the state finals on Saturday at Vestal HS.
