There was no shortage of drama.
Notre Dame, trailing by four goals late in the fourth quarter, rallied to tie Denver in Saturday’s NCAA Division I semifinal in Philadelphia, led by the five straight goals from sophomore Sergio Perkovic.
But Denver pulled out an 11-10 overtime win that earns the Pioneers a historic spot in Monday’s 1 p.m. title game against Maryland on Wesley’s Berg’s game-winning goal.
Denver’s appearance also shows the changing geographical landscape of lacrosse, with expansion now far beyond the East Coast corridor as both Denver and Notre Dame made the Final Four.
Denver coachBill Tierney, a legend at Princeton, is back in the final, meanwhile. for the first time since 2001, when he won the last of six titles with Princeton.
It’s an interesting story and one documented by the New York Times Sunday.
Maryland pulled out a 12-11 win over Hopkins, holding off another wild comeback at Hopkins scored five straight to tie it at 10-10 in the fourth quarter.
