Before we get to a busy day of New Jersey group finals on tap for today, here’s a recap, in case you weren’t with us on Twitter @LaxLessons.com or @Joe_Lombardi of some big playoff games Friday.
Section 11 determined its Class A finalists as defending Suffolk champ Smithtown East pulled away to beat archrival Smithtown West 17-11 and Ward Melville edged Northport 11-10.
Smithtown East’s Notre Dame-bound senior Brian Willetts and Ohio State-bound junior Dan Rooney each had four goals and one assist and Sean Barry had two goals and four assists. Willetts, who now has 311 career points, broke 2007 graduate Matt Hull’s school record of 310 points.
Smithtown East will face Ward Melville in the final 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stony Brook. The teams did not meet during the regular season, adding aura to the title-game matchup.
Ward Melville pulled out the win over Northport, whose only loss all season had been to Syosset, on a goal by Jake McCulloch with 1:19 to go off a feed from Dan Bucaro, who had a goal and four assists.
WM pulled out the win despite losing 22-of-25 faceoffs as Maryland-bound Austin Henningsen was dominant in the X for Northport.
Over in the Hudson Valley, Warwick stayed unbeaten and won its second straight Section 9 Class A title, beating Valley Central 13-7. The Wildcats play Section 2 champ Wednesday back in Middletown in the opening round of the state tournament. Highland beat Cornwall 11-6 and Rondout Valley defeated Red Hook 12-9 in the Class B and Class C title games, respectively.
The FCIAC determined its semifinals in games that will be played Tuesday at Brien McMcMahon High School in Norwalk. No. 2 New Canaan faces No. 3 Darien at 5 p.m. and No. 1 Greenwich takes on No. 4 Ridgefield at 7:30 p.m.
Iona Prep defended its CHSAA City AA title, beating rival Fordham Prep 9-7 to improve to 16-4.
Now, to today.
Among the New Jersey group public finals: Bridgewater-Raritan vs. Westfield, Summit vs. Chatham and Glen Ridge vs. Mountain Lakes, and private semifinals: St. Augustine Prep vs. Delbarton and Seton Hall Prep vs. Bergen Catholic.
Fordham Prep is back in action today with a game against Kellenberg in the downstate tournament.
