It’s May Day.
Day 1 of a new month supposedly in the height of spring. (Although we must admit, one of the staffers did turn up the heat last night in the LaxLessons newsroom.)
Before we take a look at what’s on tap for today, here are some quick highlights from Thursday in NY/NJ/CT hotspot varsity action:
* Niskayuna (NY) coach Mike Vorgang picked up his 350th career win in a 22-2 win over Columbia.
* Defending Connecticut state champ Darien extended its win streak to 31 with a 15-3 win over Yorktown in the Tom Lener Memorial Cup game as Coin Minius had four goals and three assists and Andrew Pugliese dominated in the faceoff X.
* University of Hartford-bound Alex Borja scored his 100th career goal as Shoreham-Wading River beat Comsewogue 14-7 in Suffolk (NY).
* Islip picked up its sixth straight win and dealt Harborfields its second straight loss after a nine-game win streak 7-2, also in Suffolk (NY).
* Fordham Prep held on for an 11-10 CHSAA (NY) win over St. Dominic’s after leading 5-1 at the half.
Now, to a busy Friday of action.
The lone unbeaten team in Suffolk, Connetquot (12-0), faces a major challenge in the form of a Northport (11-1) team that has won 10 straight.
Also in Suffolk, Smithtown East celebrates senior day when it hosts West Islip.
