It’s a Stacked Saturday in the tristate hotspot, with Connecticut public school teams in weekend action for the first time, coupled with New York and New Jersey teams now in full swing with their seasons.
We begin with a couple of tournaments benefiting cancer awareness and support for those affected by the disease of note.
Some of the top teams in the nation will be converging for the seventh annual Checking for Cancer Tournament at the Haverford School (PA).
In Shoreham-Wading River (NY), an all-day event will benefit four families affected by cancer: Lax Out Cancer, wraps up at 2:30 p.m. with a varsity game between two of Section 11’s top programs: Miller Place and Shoreham-Wading River.
There are also a slew of huge intrastate games, including an 12:30 p.m. contest between two of the region’s top Catholic programs: Delbarton (NJ) and St. Anthony’s (NJ).
Defending CT Class L champ Greenwich visits defending Suffolk (NY) Class A champ Smithtown East at 2 p.m.
Defending CT Class M state champ Darien visits NY power Niskayuna in a 6:30 p.m. game at Union College.
Two of the nation’s most successful programs, Ward Melville at Yorktown, renew their rivalry at 2 p.m. at Yorktown’s Charlie Murphy Field. The two programs have combined for 15 state titles. Yorktown last beat the Patriots in 2001.
Two-time defending CHSAA Nassau-Suffolk AAA champ Chaminade plays rival Manhasset, fresh off dealing Smithtown West (NY) its first loss of the game, in the Reg’s Rock game. Game time is 2 p.m. in Mineola. The event honors the memory of Jimmy Regan, Jr., an Army sergeant and Manhasset native and former Chaminade lacrosse player who was killed in action in Iraq in February, 2007.
