Valley Central has been one of the most consistent teams in the Hudson Valley, perennially at or near the top of the Section 9 standings.
The Vikings finished 13-6 last season, falling to Minisink Valley 15-10 in the Class A sectional semis.
Valley Central figures to be right back in the mix this coming season, led by a dynamic offense that includes the dynamic of seniors Hunter Cocks (midfielder) and Brad Howell (attackman).
The 6-foot-1, 176-pound Cocks is bound for Division III power Western New England University. You can watch his highlight reel here.
Now, here are Hunter’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
As a whole, the Valley Central lacrosse program has been having morning workouts two days a week and intramurals one day a week.
As for me personally, I have been going to the gym every day before school, and keeping up with my cardio and stick skills as well.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We always have a pretty tough schedule, but this year we have a couple big out of section games.
The games I am looking forward to most are Clarkstown South, Vernon (NJ), Arlington and of course the huge division match ups between Warwick Valley and Minisink Valley.
Some scrimmages we have are against Red Hook, Harrison and Delaware Valley (PA).
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
We have a very balanced team this season. Some of the players that will shine are senior midfielder Jack Tofallos, freshman midfielder Peter Heurich, junior LSM Brendan Shust, senior defenseman Nick Russo and sophomore defenseman Joe Ramos.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
The biggest strength of our team this season will be the amount of lacrosse IQ the team has together.
We will know when to slow the ball down and give our defense and midfield a breather, and when are the right times to push the tempo and attack the goal.
The team this season shares a big amount of chemistry from the past couple of seasons, and going back to the days we played together on the youth program.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
Section 9 has improved a lot from when it had started to now. The race for the Section 9 title is always a heated one to say the least.
With big-time contenders such as Minisink Valley, Warwick Valley, Valley Central, Pine Bush, and Monroe Woodbury the title is never a guarantee.
