Members of Team Long Island that beat Canada 10-8 in double overtime Saturday night to win the Brogden Cup are preparing to head back home from Tampa (FL), and prepare for the start of their high school seasons.
But they have plenty of memories from this past week to reflect on.
In addition to defeating Canada two times, Long Island also defeated Maryland twice, including its first game at the event, 10-3 to win the Brine National Lacrosse title in a game postponed from the summer. You can read more about that game here.
For some thoughts on the latest Strong Island accomplishment on a big stage, we checked in with one of the stars of what was a sparkling defense for Team LI: Army-bound senior longstick midfielder Danny DeSanti of St. Anthony’s High School (pictured at right in the photo above).
Now, here are Danny’s perspectives on the Brogden Cup.
What were some of the keys in the double OT win over Canada and to the unbeaten record overall?
The most important aspect in my opinion is (Massapequa senior) Phil Brady. He came up big when we needed him at the faceoff and he gave us the ball a lot.
Our goalies Dylan Moser and Kevin Carbone kept us in the game and they really stood on their heads.
Our coach Jim Konen (Hauppauge HS head coach) really pushed us to be the best and motivated us the whole tournament.
What were some of the keys in the double OT win over Canada and to the unbeaten record overall?
The game-winning goal came early in the second OT. It just felt great. The bench went nuts and the parents were behind us going crazy.
Our coaches were really excited but reminded us we had to keep our composure and had to focus on finishing the game.
Did you feel you were playing for more than Long Island, but for the U.S., in the games vs. Canada?
Absolutely, all of us did it for our country. We were there for a reason and that was to represent our country and the sport we love.
Every time we were in a huddle, we reminded ourselves to play not only for each other, but for the flag we carried and the name on the front of our jerseys (Team USA).
