The 2015 Brogden Cup now belongs on Long Island.
Team Long Island beat Canada for the second time in 24 hours 10-8 in double overtime Saturday night at the University of Tampa (FL) to win the International competition featuring leading high school seniors and juniors from Long Island, Maryland and Canada.
Long Island also defeated Maryland twice, including its first game at the event, 10-3 to win the Brine National Lacrosse title in a game postponed from the summer. You can read more about that game here.
Long Island scored the game winner early in the first OT on a man-up opportunity, in which, under International rules, it scored twice. LI scored its other goal in extra time on an empty netter by Joe Licata of Sachem East HS, who is bound for Binghamton.
“In the games against Canada, we were focused on our country,” Licata said. “We brought out an American flag with us only to our games against the International powerhouse Canada. We felt that if we lost on our own soil, it would not go over well and made it our job to bring home the title.”
Long Island received outstanding defensive and goalie play in the tournament, including in the final against Canada as Kevin Carbone (Chaminade, NY) and Dylan Moser (Westminster, CT) once again split duties.
LI went 3-0 in its Cup games, beating Maryland 11-9 earlier Saturday and Canada 15-12 in its first Cup game behind the five-goal effort of Half Hollow Hills West attackman Ryan Ozsvath, who is headed to Stony Brook University.
