Brendan Haggerty was very familiar with his college destination, Villanova University, long before the Wildcats began recruiting him.
That’s Sean Haggerty, the father of the sophomore goaltender at Manhasset HS (NY), is a former Villanova player who graduated in 1992.
But while Brendan Haggerty already had a high opinion of Villanova thanks to his father’s influence, his decision was very much his own, as you’ll soon see.
In the end, he decided to follow his father’s footsteps and verballed to Villanova last week, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
Brendan Haggerty’s bloodlines to college lax go beyond his father. Brendan’s uncle, Todd, played at Princeton, where he graduated in 1995.
The 5-foot-9, 150-pound Haggerty, a lefty, is a strong stopper who is also effective on clears.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Brendan on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision were academics, campus life and it really came down to where I was most comfortable as a student athlete.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered Providence, Harvard, Bucknell and Air Force. I visited Providence and Harvard along with Villanova.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are my quick hands and my clearing ability.
How important a factor was the fact your father played at Villanova in your decision?
My father being a Villanova alum has definitely played a huge role in my decision.
Since I was exposed to Villanova at such a young age, it became my dream. But, he allowed me to make my own decision on where I wanted to go.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced to lacrosse by my dad and started playing in local clinics in Manhasset at a very young age. I also play football.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play on the Tenacious Turtles. This summer I played in the Adrenaline Platinum Cup, Crabfeast and Maverik Showtime.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you to get to this point?
I want to thank my family, especially my Dad who has put in countless hours in helping become the best goalie I can possibly be.
I want to thank my coaches, especially Coach Powers, Coach DeSimone, Coach Licciardi, Coach Luzzi, Coach Cherry and Coach O’Meara for all their help with my development, and instruction throughout the recruiting process.
I would like to thank all the coaches I met throughout the recruiting process for spending considerable amount of time with me and my family, and ultimately helping me make my decision.
Finally I want to thank my teammates for their continuous support on and off the field.
