tristatetop100

Tristate Top 100 (Players 1-50)

First group of 10

Zach Ambrosino, sr., Taft School (CT), D/LSM (Committed to Virginia): The technically sound righty has strong stick skills to go along with good size at 6-foot-1, 190 and outstanding footwork. The Massachusetts native has the kind of tenacity and confidence that, combined with his talent level, can make him an impact player right away at Virginia.

Hunter Batesko, so., Mountain Lakes (NJ), M (Committed to Michigan): Some may be surprised to see Batesko this highly ranked at this stage of his varsity career, but we traditionally leave at at least one top spot for an athletic, developing midfielder — and this time around it’s the 6-foot-2 Batesko. A power dodger with an accurate and blistering shot, Batesko is aggressive on groundballs, a tenacious defender and like a bull in a china shop in the open field. He also excels in football and basketball.

Daniel Bucaro, sr., Ward Melville, jr., A (Committed to Georgetown): The 6-foot-3 triple threat is equally dangerous as a feeder, finisher and dodger. Should thrive at the collegiate level when he’s not the No. 1 priority of opposing defenses – at least not right away.

John Daniggelis, sr., Smithtown East (NY), M (Committed to Yale): The skilled and athletic Danigellis was arguably the best all-around quarterback in tristate football this past two seasons – with many of those abilities serving him well in lacrosse. Now that he’s devoting himself to the game year-round, look for his lacrosse IQ and decision making to match his off-the-charts talent level.

Henry Grass, sr., Bronxville (NY), A (Committed Johns Hopkins): The silky smooth attackman missed a large chunk of last season after suffering a concussion but returned to lift the Broncos in their run to a first-ever state title, registering two goals and five assists and earning most valuable offensive player in a 13-10 win over Cazenovia in the state title game. He’ll join brother Jack at JHU.

Ian Laviano, so., Cold Spring Harbor (NY), A (Committed to Virginia): Just the second eighth-grader to ever make the varsity program at tradition-rich CSH, Laviano has a skill set at his age that is rare to see. His potential is limitless if he continues to grow his game, which we fully expect will be the case.

Joey Sessa, sr., Minisink Valley (NY), A (Committed to Yale): Lightning quick and elusive, Sessa has developed his skills to an elite level. But his sheer speed is still his greatest asset. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds, and yes, since we are using a common football stat, he is also a football standout. In fact, his father, Joe, a high school lacrosse star on Long Island at Lindenhurst, is an assist coach in sprint football at Army.

Kevin Snyder, so., Commack (NY), M (Committed to Maryland): We can’t think of a single player who was more impressive at Maverik Showtime than this Maryland commit, whose hat trick in the all-star game showed his offensive ability. Snyder is a physical and athletic, ram-tough middie who simply runs over people and, when he’s not doing that, can beat his defender by shooting on the run. He’s also outstanding in the faceoff X, which had been his claim to fame prior to his offensive display at Showtime.

James Sullivan, sr., Garden City (NY), M (Committed to Harvard): After making a name for himself through his faceoff prowess as a freshman in 2012, Sullivan showed there is more to his game the last two seasons, emerging as one of the top all-around performers in the nation. He’s living proof why it’s often incongruous and in fact, often inaccurate, to label  similar, well-rounded midfielders with the FOGO or FO/M.

Brian Willetts, sr., Smithtown East (NY),  A (Committed to Notre Dame after decommitting from UNC): The 6-foot-3 athletic dodger, who also plays football and basketball, has a blistering shot and is a relentless rider. The athletic Willetts also plays football and basketball.

Decker Curran, sr., Greenwich (CT), A (Committed to Michigan): Curran combines skills, size with a blistering and accurate shot. He also is one of the top riding attackmen in the tristate hotspot.

Griffin Gelinas, fr., Brunwick (CT), A (Committed to Syracuse): The silky smooth Gelinas combines superb skills with outstanding quickness and the ability to change directions on a dime. He is also hard-nosed and makes plays with his hustle.

Josh Haubenstock, sr., Ramapo (NJ), M (Committed to Colgate after decommitting from Denver): The athletic dodger has good quickness, is strong with either hand and seldom makes mistakes.

Andrew Helmer, sr., Summit (NJ), D (Committed to Syracuse): This tenacious on-ball defender spearheads a defense that did not give up more than seven goals in a game last year, averaging 3.5 goals against. The three-year starter has helped the Hilltoppers go 45-3 the last two seasons. Coming off an honor-filled season in which he was awarded All-American, first-team all-state, junior player of the year and Union County player of the year. A captain in both football and lacrosse this

Reed Malas, sr., Mamaroneck (NY), A/M (Committed to Bucknell): The athletic feeder/finisher is strong with either hand, has good field vision as well as field generalship.

Terrence Mooney, so, St. Anthony’s (NY), M (Committed to UPenn): A prototypical two-way midfielder, Mooney feeds and finishes, excels in transition and in getting groundballs.

Ryan Ozsvath, sr., Half Hollow Hills West (NY), A (Committed to Stony Brook): This fantastic finisher scored three or more goals in 10 games last season, including a pair of six-goal games. A four-year starter, Ozsvath, who has more than 100 goals, is on pace to become Hills West’s all-time goal-scoring leader.

Stephen Parker, sr., South Side (NY), D (Committed to Air Force): One of the Island’s top defenders, Parker is not only technically sound but athletic and aggressive. He led the Cyclones in groundballs each of the last two season. He’s a big-play, takeaway defender with a high lacrosse IQ.
