Fall 2014 Signing Week coverage

With the dawning of a new decade came the emergence of Ridgefield as one of the leading programs in the state of Connecticut.

That rise to prominence began with the end of the last decade, as the Tigers beat Darien 7-6 in double OT to win the FCIAC title for the first time.

Ridgefield followed that up with a state title in 2011 and state title-game appearance in 2013.

But RHS has fallen short of its own high expectations the last two seasons, and last year, did not advance beyond the semifinals of either the FCIAC or state playoffs.

Ridgefield is hoping to end that trend in 2015.

For more on the Tigers’ prospects, we check in with one of the top defenders in the Nutmeg State, Loyola University-bound senior Paul Volante.

playerperspectiveNow, here are Paul’s perspectives on the upcoming season.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Some things we have been doing to get ready for the season are we lift 4 times a week and have just finished our fall season of lacrosse and are now starting to play in the winter league at Chelsea Piers.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule is looking pretty strong this year, we don’t have the entire schedule yet but it will be finalized soon.

The games that we are looking forward to the most are obviously those FCIAC rival games between some of the top FCIAC teams, as well as some out of conference games will some top teams. We haven’t really decided who we are going to scrimmage yet.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Some players that I think will have a breakout season are Skylar Blair, Ryan Dunn and Brad Alexander.

I think that they will all step up big time this year and help lead our team to our two goals, an FCIAC and state title.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Probably our transition game and ability to push it up the field.

Last year, we didn’t get to many chances at this, but this year we have a much different roster that is great at pushing the ball in transition.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The race in the FCIAC will due very competitive and tight this year as it is every year.

Some contending teams that I think will be fighting for the title are Darien, Greenwich, New Cannan and Staples.
