Tillman Gallagher’s initial spring sport of choice was baseball.

But by the time the sophomore at Sunset High School in Portland, OR reached the fourth grade, he discovered he just didn’t want to play it anymore.

That created an opening for lacrosse. It’s a path that soon will take him to the Division I collegiate level. The midfielder gave a verbal commitment earlier this month to Mercer, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 6-foot, 155-pound Gallagher, a righty, is an athletic player who is a strong outside shooter.

In addition to his early foray in lacrosse, Gallagher has played football and basketball and likes to snowboard.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Tillman onrecruiting_update his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
The coaching staff at Mercer is excellent, I wil get a great education, I loved the facilities and support given to lacrosse, and the sunny weather will be nice too.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I have unofficially visited High Point, Delaware, Villanova and Cabrini as well as visiting many college campus while playing different tournaments and events.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I feel that my biggest strength is in being a team player. I hope that I help to bring out the best play and confidence in any team I am playing on. I am a confident, strong, aggressive all-field player.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 8.10.49 PMWhat area of your game do you need to work on?
Always working on my left hand.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Junior Black Rhino team in Portland, West Coast Starz and Brady Bunch teams.

I have played in the High Roller events, Spotlight Showcase in Dallas and the Jake Reed Blue Chip events.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you get to this point?
I have many people to thank. First off, my parents, and then I have great coaches from Rhino and Adrenaline that have helped me so much throughout this whole process.
