Few high school lacrosse players have first-hand knowledge of the glory days of Syracuse University lacrosse — the Gait era that started in the late 1980s.
Sam Schulter is an exception.
Schulter’s uncle, Phil, played on those teams, and as a result, the Tatnall School (DE) sophomore has seemingly always envisioned his college lacrosse jersey featuring plenty of orange.
It will indeed. Schulter, a Class of 2017 longstick midfielder, made a verbal commitment to Syracuse last week, a decision first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
With his verbal, he because the first player in the history of the NXT LC travel program to commit to SU.
The 6-foot, 160-pound righty is an outstanding athletic who also plays varsity soccer and hockey. He has outstanding stick skills and range and has a knack for throwing big checks.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Sam on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I have always loved Syracuse lacrosse ever since I was little and my uncle also played at Syracuse and I wanted to keep the legacy going
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was also considering Army and visited twice.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My ability to shut down offense players by throwing hard checks and making them not want to dodge
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on playing good solid defense and not trying to take away the ball constantly
How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
My family has always played lacrosse so I grew up playing.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for NXT 2017 and we participate in many showcases.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my NXT coaches and (Syracuse Assistant) Coach (Lelan) Rogers and (Syracuse Head) Coach (John) Desko.
