John Galbraith’s recruiting stock soared after he earned an appearance in the Class of 2017 all-star game at the Maverik Showtime National Lacrosse Recruiting Spotlight in July.
Galbraith, a midfielder from Pittsford (NY), narrowed his choices to five programs that he felt best combined excellence in academics and athletics.
He then decided on Colgate University, giving a verbal commitment to the Raiders, a decision first reported when it was made earlier this week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Galbraith, who is known as “John John,” a righty, is Pittsford’s second 2017 commit, joining Ohio State-bound midfielder Barker Colby.
Now, here’s a Q&A with John on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose Colgate because it is academically one of the best universities in the country.
Colgate not only has a tradition of great academics, but also an outstanding lacrosse program.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Hobart, Bucknell, Holy Cross and Georgetown.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe my strengths as a player are pushing the ball in transition with my speed and being able to limit turnovers with my stick skills.
I would describe my play as fast, physical and team oriented.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I’m always working on improving my shooting and footwork. Every season, I strive to get better at all areas of my game and become a more complete player.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced by my dad in first grade and have been playing ever since. I also play soccer in the fall.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Sweetlax Platinum and National. In the past years, I attended Nike Blue Chip and Maverik Showtime.
Any final thoughts?
I’d like to thank coach Andrew Whipple and coach Kevin Martin for their leadership and helping me develop not only as a player, but a person.
I would like to thank my family for supporting and believing in me throughout the whole process.
Most importantly i would like to thank my dad for taking me on endless road trips and never giving up on me.
