Tyler Alvarez is a midfielder who excels in a fast-paced game.
At the next level, he hopes to help LIU Post make a run at a national championship.
The Sachem East HS (NY) 2015 standout’s verbal to the Pioneers was first reported last week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-9, 155-pound Alvarez is a righty who is strong both offensively and defensively.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Tyler on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I decided on LIU Post because they have a strong business program that I will attend. The winning tradition of the lacrosse program is exactly what I wanted to become part of and I believe I will contribute to future runs at the national championship. Having coaches like (LIU Post Head) Coach (John) Jez and Coach V (Assistant Coach Frank Vitolo) was also a big factor in my decision.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited UMass, Sacred Heart, UMBC, SUNY Cortland, Salisbury, Pace, Molloy and Scranton.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My biggest attribute is that I am a two-way middie that will do whatever the team needs from me to help win the game. My style of play is fast and I like to push the ball in transition.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I will continue to develop my shooting ability because it is so important at the next level.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My father introduced me to the game of lacrosse and I started playing when I was 7 years old. I also played club soccer for a number of years and ran cross country.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I played for the Long Island Jesters in ninth and 10th grade. This summer I played for both the South Shore Ballers and Sachem East.
I participated in the NXT Philly Showcase, US lacrosse U-15 Nationals, Brine National Lacrosse Classic, Peak 200, Blue Chip 225, Under Armour Tryouts and Stony Brook fall showcase.
Any final thoughts?
There were a lot of good coaches along the way. I would like to thank my first PAL coach Wayne Rhatigan because I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.
At the high school level, Coach Murphy, Coach O’Connell, Coach Castagna, Coach Brink and Jim Konen, also helped me improve my game.
My father coached me through middle school club and we enjoyed many hours together on the lacrosse field.
Finally, I would like to thank both my parents for doing everything they could for me to have this opportunity.
