Want to see the definition of a “textbook defender” in action?
Then be sure to catch Nick DeLuca of Baldwin High School (NY) in action for his senior season in 2015. Because that’s exactly what the all-conference defender is, according to his coaches. DeLuca hopes the varsity claim to fame holds true at the collegiate level.
Last week, he decided where that will be, committing to Division II power NYIT, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-8, 185-pound DeLuca, a righty, has been a starter since freshman year.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Nick on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
I was looking for a school to fit me as a student and on the field. NYIT has a pre-med program, a winning lacrosse program and is close to home. It is the perfect fit for me. I am excited and looking forward to working with Coach (Bill) Dunn and the coaching staff in 2015.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered Seton Hill. I visited Providence, Albright and Franklin & Marshall.
What are your strengths as a player?
I am strong one-on-one and like to read my opponent.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I could work on all areas of my game.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played? My mom signed me up in second grade. I started as an offensive player but my PAL coach suggested that I play defense, and I’ve been playing defense ever since.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in? I started playing with my town team PRIME with Coach Frank Ferguson and for the past five years I played travel lacrosse with FLG. I played on the Long Island Nassau Team, the Empire State Cup Team, National Long Island Brine Team and have played at the FLG in 3D, MVP, Jake Reed, Philly Showcase and National 175 showcases.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my parents for supporting me in my journey to play lacrosse in college. I also would like to thank my HS Coach, Coach Garguilo and the Baldwin coaching staff, my coaches at FLG, Coach Winkoff, Coach Hedstrom, Coach Soper and Coach Hungerford and the coaching staff. Also, thanks to Steve Jahelka and Christian Scuderi who helped me with my training and for making me a better player.
