We’ve been documenting the impressive job Mercy College, a Division II program in Dobbs Ferry (NY), has been doing in landing commitments from some of Long Island’s leading players.
One of the latest such standouts had a connection to Mercy well before its recent success in attracting Long Island talent.
For starters, 2015 attackman Bobby Chillianis plays for Bethpage High School, the alma mater of Mercy coach Jordan Levine.
But most noteworthy is the fact that Chillianis will join his older brother, Danny, at Mercy. Danny Chillianis is a three-time All-Nassau County defender who just completed his sophomore season as a defenseman for the Mavericks, where he is a team captain.
The 5-foot-9, 164-pound Bobby Chillianis, a finisher who plays a fast style, was an all-county selection himself this past spring, scoring 40 goals. His commitment was first reported last week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Bobby on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
An advantage I had was I have been around the school and the lax program and it made my decision easy.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Pace, Limestone and Bridgewater College.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I play fast and finish. I can play in tight space and I can adapt my game to the framework of the team
How important a factor in your decision was it that your brother Danny plays at Mercy and Coach Levine is a Bethpage grad?
I have a brother? Just kidding. Out of all the other positive factors being part of the Mavericks playing with my brother is a bonus. As far as Coach Levine being a Bethpage grad wasn’t a factor at all, I was able to meet him on the field my brother’s first couple of years and I respect him as a coach.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports do you play?
I started playing lax in second grade, my older brother and sister played so you can say I followed in their steps. I also play football
What travel team do you play on or showcases did you participate in?
St. John’s Showcase and 205.
Any final thoughts?
Thank you to all my coaches and teammates throughout the years and I am looking forward to being a Mercy Maverick
