We’ve been documenting the recruiting successes coach Dom Starsia and the University of Virginia Cavaliers have been enjoying in terms of landing commitments from the East Coast.
The Cavs’ latest recruiting splash comes from beyond the Northeast. Well beyond, in fact.
He’s Harry Wellford, an athletic Class of 2017 two-way midfielder from the “Show Me State” of Missouri.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Wellford was a key performer for Missouri Division I champion Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day as a freshman this past spring, registering 27 goals and 23 assists, earning first-team all-state and first-team all-conference honors.
This tower of power is a natural righty who is strong with both hands and an outstanding dodger with a blistering and accurate outside shot.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Harry on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Great academics, the opportunity to play lacrosse at the highest level, and the coolest lacrosse setting for players and student fans in the country.
The final factor was the opportunity to play for Dom Starsia, the winningest college lacrosse coach in history and a great person.
What other schools did you consider and what schools did you visit?
I considered Duke, Princeton, Michigan, Ohio State, Brown, Georgetown and Notre Dame. I visited Duke, Princeton, Michigan, Ohio State, Brown and Georgetown.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My size and athleticism allows me to dodge past defenders, get my hands free, and play fundamental defense. Another strength is I am able to shoot left-handed and right-handed.
I would describe my style of play as a downhill dodger, two-way middie and an outside shooter.
What area of the game do you need to work on?
I need to work on getting my head up when I dodge and being able to find the backside cutter. I also need to work on incorporating more moves into the way I dodge.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My older brother, Warren, introduced me to lacrosse when I was 5 years old. He played in high school and loved the game so he got me started at a young age.
I played football, soccer, baseball and basketball, but I currently focus on football and lacrosse.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for 3D Colorado, 3D National, Project Missouri and West Coast Starz. I participated in Adrenaline Blackcard/Platinum Cup, Nike Jake Reed Bluechip, King of the Hill and Colorado Cup.
Any final thoughts?
I just wanted to thank the MICDS community, my family, my lacrosse team, and my coaches Andy Kay and Jamie Munro.
