* HS Scoreboard Central, Monday, 3/31
The phrase “March goes in like a lion and out like a lamb” sure doesn’t apply to 2014 weather-wise.
A surprise spring snowstorm dumped up to 5 inches of the white stuff within a 15-mile horizontal stretch of central Suffolk County on Long Island on Monday.
That same stretch extended to Fairfield County in Connecticut and Westchester County in New York, with just a dusting to an inch reported in those locales, but, coupled with freezing rain and ice pellets, enough to make for mayhem in the morning commute.
Was that the final parting shot of a brutal winter marked by near record-low temps and number of winter storms?
Let’s hope so.
Projections for rest of this week, at least, call for moderating and just a slight chance of precipitation — which would be mainly in the form of showers on Friday and Saturday. And that’s no April’s Fool joke, folks.
So let’s get to today’s games.
We start in South Huntington on Long Island where St. Anthony’s, off to an uncharacteristic 0-2 start and in need of a W, hosts an Iona Prep team that opened the season with an impressive win at Somers. Game-time is 5 p.m.
Also in the CHSAA, Archbishop Stepinac plays Kennedy Catholic in the first meeting between two schools in any sport since Kennedy joined the CHSAA.
Now to New Jersey, and a marquee matchup between host Bergen Catholic and Mountain Lakes. Both teams have big weeks, starting with this one.
Back to Long Island and a Nassau County clash as Farmingdale hosts Hicksville. Either one of these teams could emerge as a conference title contender. Both have had challenging early schedules and are off to 2-1 starts.
In the Hudson Valley (NY), Section 1 Class C finalist Pleasantville is eager to show it can beat a Class A team in a game against Class A power Arlington.
Heading upstate, one of the nation’s premier programs, West Genesee, hosts Liverpool in a big-time upstate battle, and one that’s under the lights, with a 7:30 p.m. start.
Also of note today, first, back in NY: Putnam Valley at Lakeland/Panas, Horace Greeley at Rye and Jericho at South Side, and, in NJ, Glen Ridge at Don Bosco Prep.
