Two of the top programs in programs in New York’s Hudson Valley got things started Thursday, as Yorktown beat Putnam and John Jay downed Arlington. John Jay and Yorktown will each take 1-0 records into their annual showdown Saturday.

Two other top teams in the Valley get things going today as 2012 CHSAA AA champion and 2013 finalist Iona Prep visits Section 1 power Somers at 5:30 p.m.
In a border battle in Section 1, New Rochelle, coming off an overtime opening win over Sleepy Hollow, visits Pelham at 4:30 p.m.
Long Island power West Islip, coming off a season-opening loss to Hauppauge, plays Smithtown East (1-1) in the first meeting between the teams since East ended WI’s run of Suffolk County titles. Game-time is 4:30 p.m. with the east-side Bulls serving as hosts.
Hauppauge, meanwhile, hosts Commack today at 5 p.m. Also at 5 p.m., Connetquot plays at Smithtown West.
Also on Long Island, it’s a 516 vs. 631 battle Syosset plays at Northport at Veterans Park at 4:30 p.m.
In interesting interstate showdowns, Sachem North (N.Y.) visits Archbishop Spalding (Md.), St. Augustine Prep (N.J.) plays at the Episcopal Academy (Pa.) and La Salle College (Pa.) hosts DeMatha (Md.).
Over in New Jersey, St. Joseph Metuchen visits Rutgers Prep. Rutgers Prep is coming off a 19-win season and is eager to show more success is in store.
Back on LI, Smithtown West (2-0), the No. 1 team in the most recent LaxLessons Tristate Top 25 rankings, hosts a Connetquot program coming off an 11-7 season. In an interesting interstate matchup of national powers, Conestoga (Pa.) hosts Calvert Hall (Md.).
Down in lacrosse’s proud , age-old and traditional home base of the sport, Baltimore, Gilman (Md.) plays at Georgetown Prep (Md.).
