We’re not even through the first full week of games, and already it’s been an eventful season on Long Island.
In the span of just over 24 hours, a pair of teams coming off six-win seasons picked up upset wins.
Locust Valley did it on Wednesday, beating 2013 Nassau County Class A finalist Port Washington 10-9.
Rocky Point did it yesterday. The Eagles, behind a zone defense and the faceoff play of Binghamton University-bound junior Jack Sullivan beat a Smithtown East team coming off a breakout 2013 season 8-7.
In another 8-7 game, Syosset bounced back from its season-opening loss to Garden City by beating South Side 8-7 as Mac O’Keefe had four goals, including the winner, and goalie Bryan Ochs made 12 saves.
Also of note, Justin Arini’s coaching debut at Shoreham-Wading River HS (NY) was a successful one as the WIldcats beat Greenport-Mattituck-Southold 18-3.

Now, to today.
St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), which won four straight CHSAA AAA titles before being unseated by Chaminade last year, opens the season with a big test with an 8 p.m. game against Loyola-Blakefield at the University of Pennsylvania. Loyola-Blakefield is 1-2 with back-to-back losses to Malvern Prep (8-5) and Haverford (11-9).
In another interesting interstate battle, Trinity-Pawling from New York’s Hudson Valley plays at Maryland power Boys Latin in a 4 p.m. game.
The Long Island slate is highlighted by a contest between defending Suffolk County Class B champ Miller Place and visiting Bay Shore at 4:30 p.m.. Also of note, Lynbrook hosts Oceanside, also at 4:30.
