Take away losses to Nassau County champions Massapequa (Class A) and Garden City (Class B) and Wantagh was unbeaten during the 2013 regular season.
The Warriors, who finished 14-3, won four straight to open the season before falling to ‘Pequa 16-6 on April 5, three games before a 9-1 setback to G.C.
Wantagh’s season ended with a 12-8 loss to North Shore in the Nassau County quarterfinals. Two-time state champion Garden City won the Section 8 Class B crown by beating Manhasset in the title game.
How does Wantagh look in 2014? For more on that, we check in with Kyle Cain.
The lefty playmaking attackman will be headed to St. Joseph’s University after his final varsity season with the Warriors.
Now, here are Kyle’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
We have been doing preseason workouts in the weight room and skill training in the gym at night. We also have been playing indoors on the weekends at Coastal Sports in Hauppague.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We are scrimmaging Hicksville, Babylon and West Islip.
Our non-league games are against Massapequa, Joel Barlow (Conn.), Maine-Endwell, Mamaroneck, East Meadow, Seaford and North Shore.
We always look forward to playing Garden City. Long Beach, Carey, and South Side will be competitive games.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
We have a great mix of talented upperclassmen and underclassmen with two very good goalies. The midfield will be strong again with senior Mike Ferraro (Cortland) and sophomores Kyle Sliwak and Dylan Beckwith. Both are uncommitted but won’t be for long.
Senior Bobby Beshlian (Limestone) and sophomore Bobby Casey (Hofstra) will give us solid goalkeeping. Junior Ralph Sommers (Marist) will lead a young yet talented defense.
What do you think the strength of you r team will be this year?
A deep team that will play great team D and share the ball unselfishly.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
Contending teams will be Garden City, Long Beach, Carey, South Side and Plainedge.
