Rundown of Saturday college lacrosse finals, box scores

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A 10-goal scoring burst in the second quarter spurred the No. 7 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team to a 16-8 victory over No. 1 Syracuse in front of 5,283 at the Carrier Dome Saturday afternoon.
Maryland (3-0) was led by junior attackman Jay Carlson and freshman midfielder Connor Cannizzaro, who each had four points on three goals and an assist. Syracuse (2-1) got four points on three goals and an assist from Henry Schoonmaker.
The Orange got off to a quick start with Kevin Rice and Donahue scored unassisted goals in the first six minutes of the game to give Syracuse the early 2-0 lead.
Maryland got on the board with 7:59 left in the first when a quick restart off of a missed shot gave freshman attackman Matt Rambo rifled a shot from the right wing off of a feed from junior midfielder Bryan Cole.
A sideline violation on the Terps gave Syracuse the first extra-man opportunity of the game and Schoonmaker converted off of a feed by Donahue to extend the Orange lead back to two with 4:53 left in the first.
Senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk made it a one-goal game again when he dodged the Orange long pole multiple times before getting off a low shot that trickled through Syracuse goalie Don Lamolinara to make it a 3-2 game at the 3:47 mark.
The second quarter started off with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on junior faceoff man Charlie Raffa, but the Maryland man-down unit held strong with senior goalie Niko Amato making a big save on a shot by Schoonmaker near the end of the penalty.
The Orange did push its lead back to a pair when Randy Staats found Derek Maltz for a score with 12:37 left in the second to make it a 4-2 Syracuse lead.
But the game would take a turn there as the Terps would go on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game.
Starting the run was a typical goal for Carlson, as he dipped and ducked under a SU defender before tip-toeing the crease and finishing past Lamolinara with 10:27 to go in the second.
Sophomore Henry West tied the game at 4-4 for the Terps with an unassisted laser from the left wing at the 9:41 mark.
Cannizzaro, who grew up 16 miles from the Carrier Dome, scored the next two goals for the Terps to extend the lead to 6-4. After an unassisted goal by the freshman to make it a 6-4 lead, he then took a feed from Rambo and finished from the left side to up the lead to 7-4 with 8:23 left in the second.
Syracuse gave Maryland several extra-man opportunities on faceoff violations and the Terps used on of those to make it an 8-4 lead as Carlson scored his second of the game off of a feed by junior midfielder Joe LoCascio at the 8:08 mark.
Raffa scored two of the next three goals for Maryland, winning faceoffs clean and running in unchecked for inside goals. Sandwiched in between was Rambo’s second goal of the game, which combined to give Maryland a 10-4 lead.
Syracuse stopped the bleeding as Hakeem Lecky scored an unassisted goal at the 5:42 mark of the second, but Chanenchuk answered back with 2:32 left in the half on a runner down the right alley to push Maryland’s lead back to six at 11-5.
Syracuse had the ball and looked to cut the lead back to five, but junior defender Goran Murray caused a turnover by Rice and junior defender Casey Ikeda came out of a scrum with a tough groundball to give the Terps the ball back with 41 seconds left.
That effort led to the Terps’ 10th goal of the quarter as Cannizzaro made a great look across the crease to junior attackman Kevin Forster, who showed a lot of patience as he waited for an opening before finishing past Orange goalie Bobby Wardell with just nine seconds left on the clock.
Maryland opened up the third quarter with Carlson finishing his hat trick from in tight off of a feed from Forster to make it 13-5 Terps at the 12:53 mark.
Wardell made a stop on a Channenchuk shot on a Maryland EMO, but his clearing pass was knocked down by Cannizzaro right in front of the goal. Wardell was out of the crease and Cannizzaro had a clean look at the goal, but his shot bounced over the crossbar. Carlson collected a ball from the endline on the quick restart and fed Cannizzaro on the crease, who finished past a recovering Wardell to make it 14-5 at the 7:47 mark.
LoCascio made it a 16-5 lead for Maryland with a laser off a stepdown from the right alley off of a feed from Forster with 5:16 left in the third.
Schoonmaker stopped the Terps’ 6-0 run with his second of the day for the Orange at the 1:34 mark to make it a 16-6 game heading into the fourth quarter.
Staats scored the first goal of the fourth quarter for the Orange to trim the Maryland lead back to single digits with 6:16 left to play and Syracuse added its final tally with 0:02 on the clock.
Raffa was dominant at the faceoff X, winning 19-of-26 faceoffs with a game-high 11 groundballs.
Maryland’s defense was stout all afternoon and Amato backed it up with an 11-save performance.
Maryland stays in conference when it hosts 2013 NCAA champions Duke at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on Saturday, March 1. Faceoff for the game between the Terps and Blue Devils is set for noon and the game will be streamed live on TerpsTV.

• With three points on two goals and an assist, freshman Matt Rambo registered his third multi-point, and multi-goal game of his career.
• With four points on three goals and an assist, freshman Connor Cannizzaro registered his first hat trick, third multi-point and second multi-goal game of his career.
• With two points on a goal and an assist, junior Kevin Forster now has two multi-point games for his career.
• With two points on a goal and an assist, junior Bryan Cole registered the first multi-point game of his career.
• With two points on two goals, junior Charlie Raffa registered his first multi-goal and second multi-point game of his career.
