Should Sachem North once again make it to the postseason, the Flaming Arrows will be as battled tested as any team around.
After all, they play in one of the country’s most competitive conferences – Suffolk County (N.Y.) Division 1.
For those who may be unfamiliar, the conference includes consensus 2013 national champion Ward Melville as well as West Islip, Smithtown East and Smithtown West.
For a look at how Sachem North factors into that highly competitive mix, we check in with Jimmy Hoffman.
A left-handed midfielder, Hoffman is key part of a strong senior class. Hoffman will play his college lacrosse at West Point.
Now, here are Jimmy’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
Our team has been doing wall ball every Sunday with chalk talks for the offense and defense twice a week. Also we’ve been having practice in our indoor facility at CIS (Center Island Sports in Ronkonkoma) twice a week.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We’re looking forward to the big games against teams like Ward Melville and the Smithtowns. We also have our yearly scrimmages against some of the too teams down in Maryland.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
There are a lot of uncommitted players on our team that could have big years for us like Mike Sofia and Jake Castorf.
Some young sophomores, attackman Tom Haun (Stony Brook) and goalie Jacob Giacalone (Johns Hopkins), are expected to have big years.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think our main strength is our chemistry. We have all been playing together for a very long time and look forward to make this year count.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
I expect to be one of the top teams on the Island this year. Some contenders this year will be teams like Northport and one of our cross town rivals Sachem East.
