It was a breakthrough season for Friends Academy in 2013.
The Quakers, making their third straight appearance in the Nassau County (N.Y.) Class C championship game, came away with the title.
Friends picked up a decisive 9-4 win against Cold Spring Harbor, the team it played in the title game each of the previous two years.
The Quakers, who fell to Shoreham-Wading River in the Long Island championship game, should be title contenders once again.
For more, we turn to one of the top attackmen on Long Island, Bucknell University-bound William Sands.
Now, here are William’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
We practice once a week and play every Sunday in a winter league. Everyone has been doing a lot of strength and conditioning and doing full team workouts. We also have captain practices where we work on all skill work.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
We are scrimmaging Manhasset as well as Syosset. Both team are very competitive and I believe it will get us playing at the level we need to play very early on. I am looking forward to our game against Cold Spring Harbor. We have developed such a strong rivalry with them. I am also looking forward to playing Bergen Catholic from New Jersey.
What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
I believe a lot of players will surprise people. Gavin Tam in a very strong Sophomore goalie and he will step in after playing behind Chre Teitelbaum last year. All of the seniors know whats at stake, So I think every senior will step up as needed.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Our main strength is our chemistry, We have a ton of returning guys with a lot of experience. Our senior leadership is a huge strength. Friends Academy has grown so much as a lacrosse program and with the hard work and leadership of the players on the team this year, I truly believe “the sky is the limit.”
