With Fall National Letter of Intent Signing Week set to start on Wednesday, Nov. 13, we’ll have the most up-t0-date rundown of all Class of 2014 college commits by high school.
One school that will be near the top of the list is Sachem North (N.Y.).
The Flaming Arrows now have nine 2014 verbals, with the latest coming from defenseman Keith McCoy, who’s headed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, a commitment first reported when it was made on Nov. 6 by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
“Keith did a great job last year for us as the fourth defensemen,” Sachem North coach Jay Mauro said. “This past summer, he really elevated his game. We believe he will still continue to develop and be a force for us on defense.”
The 6-foot, 185-pound McCoy, a righty, is an aggressive player with good size and strength and a high lacrosse IQ.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Keith on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Kings Point offers undeniable hands on experience with great recognition as a school. My interests include studying mechanical and marine engineering and possibly serving my country, I believe it was the best fit for myself because of all the options the Academy offers.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I had also considered Providence College, the University of Vermont, Tufts University and SUNY Maritime. I had visited all those schools other than Tufts.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I have been playing lacrosse since Pre-K which has helped make my lacrosse IQ high. Also, my size has helped me with many aspects of the game.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to continue to work on my on-field communication.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My father signed me up when I was very young and I began to play for the Sachem Athletic Club. I also wrestled and played football since I was 5 until the JV high school level.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
Over the summer, Sachem North plays in various tournaments along the East Coast. I also was fortunate enough to play in two very big showcase camps (Adrenaline Challenge and Battle of Hotbeds) with a team called the American Revolution that consisted of players from all over the country and coached by Peter Tumbas.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank Coach Mauro, (Sachem North Assistant) Coach (John) Lang and the rest of the Sachem North lacrosse coaches for helping me receive the opportunities I have, all of the Sachem North Lacrosse families who have given up a lot of their time to better our program, and my mother, father and brother for always supporting me.
